"Have you kissed a girl like that before, for real?"

OCTOBER 2013

Matty opens his bedroom door, gesturing for his friend to wait outside. "I just need to tidy it up a bit before you come in."

It wasn't like Matty had never had a friend in his bedroom before, but since his twelfth birthday, his mother had washed her hands of cleaning it for him, stating that 'If you haven't learnt to pick your underwear up by now, then I must be doing something wrong as a parent."

...So now, here Matty was, gathering up a few days of dirty laundry from the floor and shoving them in his wash basket. He heads to his unmade bed, wafting the duvet a few times before laying it down on the sheet and spreading it smooth with his fingers. He spots his blanket scrunched up by his pillow...yes he still snuggled with it at night. A habit he just couldn't break, but he didn't want his friend to know that.

Matty takes his blanket and walks over to his underwear drawer, opening it and shoving the blanket right to the back, before closing it.

Surveying the room one last time, Matty heads to the bedroom door, popping his head around the corner. "You can come in now." He says, opening the door to let his friend inside.

"So, this is my room." Matty says, standing back rather proudly. His room was plenty big for one, the decor in that weird place between childhood and adolescence, with the space rocket wallpaper now being covered over with posters of his four favourite girls, with a few extra of that one special member.

Joy was Matty's new best friend, they had found eachother through their mutual love and admiration for the group and they also sat together in English.

Joy sits on the edge of Matty's bed, taking in all the images. "God Matty, I love that one above your bed." She leans over a little more to take in every detail of the image.

"Wait till you see this one." Matty opens one side of his wardrobe door to reveal a solo image of the woman he had said he was going to marry. "I cannot help but kiss her face every time I get out something to wear." He says, spending just a moment to bask in her visuals, those brown locks, curled just a little at the tips. Her lips cherry red with lipsick...ah Matty could feel himself getting lost in the imagery.

Joy covers her mouth, stifling a giggle at the thought of Matty kissing the poster. "Hey Matty. What would you do if she walked into your room right now and said 'Matty...let me kiss you.' " Joy asks with an excited wiggle.

Matty turns and joins Joy on the bed, sitting next to her. He stares at his bedroom door as she enters his imagination. "I would be like sure! And I would let her put her arms around me and I'd kiss her like this." Matty wraps his arms around himself as if they were hers and pouts out his lips as if he is having a full on kissing session with the woman of his dreams.

This causes Joy to giggle once again. "Matty?" She says trying to compose herself a little.

Matty stops with his mini act and looks at his friend. "Yeah?"

"Have you kissed a girl like that before...for real?" Joy's face looks a little more serious than before.

Matty just laughs. "No. Of course I haven't!"

"Then how do you know what you are doing?" Joy wonders, now finding her fingers becoming restless as they begin to fiddle with a button on the cuff of her blouse.

"I dunno?" Matty shrugs. "I guess I've seen it on the telly. It doesn't look difficult Joy."

"I wanna know what it's like to kiss someone." Joy replies, still fiddling with that button as she looks at Matty briefly, before looking down at Matty's dungarees.

Matty looks ahead of him, again going into his imagination. "I think it will make me feel warm inside, because I will love them so much." He says in an almost dreamy tone, once again gazing longingly at his idol.

"Do...do you wanna try it?"

"Mm?"

Joy turns a little towards her friend. "Kissing for real...do you wanna try it?"

Matty looks at Joy a little confused. "What... like kiss you?"

"Yes." Joy's voice is small and she can feel her cheeks redden. She just wanted to know what it would feel like.

Matty shrugs, not really phased by the request. It wasn't like he had the hots for his friend. "Sure."

He gets onto the bed and crosses his legs, his friend doing the same opposite him. "Close your eyes then." Matty instructs his friend as he rests his hands on his own knees.

Joy lets out a little giggle as she shuts her eyes and purses her lips.

Matty frowns as he looks at his friend's lips looking like a duck's. "Joy you're not gonna blow a trumpet. Just relax them a bit."

"Sorry." His friend replies as her lips slacken a little with her eyes staying firmly closed.

Matty looks at the target and thinks to how he had seen it done on one of those soap operas his mother insists on watching. He tilts his head a little to the side and leans forward, having to go all the way to meet Joy's lips. Then they connect.

Matty closes his eyes, imagining that his friend is his idol. That he is kissing her softly right in this moment.

Matty leans forward a little more, his hands now resting on the bed by his knees. Joy grabs a hold of Matty's upper arms for support as the innocent kiss resumes, only stopping when Matty feels a tickling sensation on his right hand.

He ignores it at first, thinking maybe it's Joy's long hair brushing his skin but the feeling felt too coarse to be hair.

Matty pulls back from the kiss and almost jumps, pulling his hand back.

"What's the matter?" Joy asks, her hands still holding onto Matty's upper arms.

"Uhh...nothing.'' Matty replies quickly, holding something behind his back.

Joy picks up on Matty being secretive and tries to peer around his shoulders. "What are you hiding Matty?"

"Nothing! I said nothing." He repeats, feeling for his pillow behind him to shove something under it. He now shows both of his empty hands to his friend as proof. "See...nothing."

Joy removes her hands from Matty's arms, the kiss being a more pressing moment in her thoughts than whatever Matty was concealing. "Did I do ok?"

Matty laughs." "How should I know?"

***

It isn't until later that evening when Joy had gone home that Matty let himself think about it. Not so much the kiss, well, he thought about it a bit. He liked Joy, but knew that girls weren't really his thing. Not in the girlfriend sense ... well apart from his idol, but that was more because he wanted to be like her that have her as a girlfriend. No, what was pressing on his mind the most, was the blanket.

He could have sworn that he had shoved it in his underwear drawer, right to the back, or did he just think he had and never did?

Matty lifts up his pillow. There it was laying on the bedsheet. He lifts up the near threadbare brown cloth, looking at it with a frown. "Blanket, are you playing tricks on me?"
