The rain was coming down harder than ever in the spring. Almost everything was being dragged out of people's yards as the rain quickly turned into a flood. Everyone in the neighborhood was either stuck on top of something high above the ground or stuck inside their house, which soon turned into many people trying to get them out before they were drowned inside their own homes.
I remember very clearly my basement had been flooded that same day. A lot of the stuff we kept down there got ruined. Thankfully, the flood had cooled down, except it took the entire spring for the water to evaporate, hardly anyone was able to get any food or groceries for a couple of weeks left of spring. It was the middle of summer now, some people will say that they would want a smaller flood compared to the last one just so they would have more water to jump into to cool down from the heat.
The heat was miserable, always made you want to pour cold water all over you. The kids in the neighborhood usually had the hose and was playing with one another while spraying each other with the hose. Meanwhile, I'm stuck inside most of the day because I have to watch over my little sister since my parents are barely home. They always go party and drink with their friends, they tell my older brother to watch over us but all he likes to do is either invite his friends over and ignore us, or just leave the house completly. When he leaves he never tells me where he's going.
As you can see, I'm always the one watching over my little sister Kayla, making lunch, dinner, make snacks. Have to be careful to make sure she doesn't get hurt. I'm fifteen. Watching over my little sister, making meals, and watching over the house.
Great.Tuesday, July 16th.
I remember.
The running, low on money, hardly any food, not much shelter, running out of places to go.
Unable to find a place to even stay away from my town for a little while longer.
I had ran away a couple of weeks before, I had stolen some of my mom's money from her purse and had packed bags of just a few outfits and some food. But it didn't last me very long. I had to spend the money on more food and something to drink. It's not as easy as everyone had made it seem.
I had walked into a small flea market one day with some cash in hand, I could probably buy a drink and only one donut. So I got a water and a glazed donut and paid for it. The cashier looked at me weirdly.
"Where are your parents?"
I ended up lying. "Their out in the car in the parking lot."
"I'm fifteen so they trusted me to come in here alone and buy myself something." The age part was true, so I didn't lie all that much huh? They brushed it off and gave me my stuff in the bag and out the store I went.
I remember sitting on the curb by the entrance of the flea market, eating and drinking. The bottled water was probably my first drink in about a day. It wasn't long until a car that I swore looked familiar pulled into the parking lot.
Someone opened the car door,
that someone started running towards me.
It hit me, that car,
was my mom's.
I still don't know how she found me. I honestly didn't expect her to be looking for me. But she did and dragged me back into her car.
That was such a long time ago, and nobody in my family likes talking about it. I honestly just wish i was able to run away for good sometimes.
Kayla ran down the stairs as soon as mom was about to leave for her job interview. She was trying to work at a diner place down the road. It paid well and it was a simple job, if she could avoid being late for things after partying and drinking with her friends and dad. It was why i was always stuck watching over my little sister. My older brother Chase never wanted to stay home and watch us even though he's almost 18 and needed responsibilities.
Mom walked out the door after hugging kayla who was on her leg, and then Chase came running down the stairs, hopping over the last three.
"I'm going to a friends house again. Don't let Kayla eat a crayon or whatever.""Why don't you just stay for once? we're your siblings and you don't even take the responsibilities mom told YOU to do." I said.
"Liam, you're fifteen, im just trying to show you the responsibilities you'll have too when you get my age. Or our parents age. So suck it up." He says, with a sarcastic smile, putting his shoes on. "Oh and don't run away while i'm gone."
That little—
i was cut off by Kayla pulling on my shirt wanting me to get her some of the snacks in the pantry.
Chase went out the door.
I sigh and just open up the pantry door and let Kayla pick out whatever she wanted, not too much, just something to hold her off until lunch.
I went over and sat on the couch trying to watch tv and cool down. It was still summer, or at least the ending of it by now. August. The AC comes on and off whenever it likes too, dad was supposed to find a new one but he never really looked into it much afterwords. Said he was to busy with work to even worry about a cooling down system.
He always did this. I used to play sports until i realized none of my parents would go to the games and watch me. One time i even won a game and they weren't even there to see it. All they asked on phone call because again, "work," is if i won. So you can see why I ran away the first time. They don't really care when it comes to the children.
If they do, they have a shitty way of showing it.
A news report came on the Tv. A teenager my age had ran away from home, her parents reported her missing after they noticed she hadn't come home last night. People say she was last seen at her friends house for a little party they were having about one of the students they knew who won in the dance team they had in their school. Her name was Angie. She had short blonde hair, kind of in a curly pixie cut. Blue eyes, always wore a jean jacket with a black spaghetti strap crop top, and sweat pants.
Her mom was spoken too.News reporter; You say your daughter had gone missing?
Mother; Yes, she told me there was a party at her friends house for a girl who won the dance team and I haven't heard from her since then. She said with a tissue in her hand wiping away any tears. Her voice was shaky.
News reporter: If your daughter is seeing this what do you want to tell her?
Mother: I just want you home baby, you're not in trouble, just please come home safely. Me and your father are concerned for you and we just want you to be okay
News reporter: Is there anything you would like to say to the audience?
I listened to this part, don't exsctly know why, but i did.
Mother; If your thinking about running away, think about how your family might react! They could be all worried about you, they won't know if somethings wrong with you or if you were taken away. You have people who love you dearly, running away is a selfish choice. So think about it before you run away because once you do it, you've affected everyone you know.As if.
My mom and dad would be to busy at work, and chase wouldn't be here. He'd be with his friends. Only person who would be at least confused is Kayla.—————————————————————————
