You chugged down in one gulp the whole box of orange juice you brought from home, staring with disgust the sandwich the lunch lady gave you today. Eating all alone on the stairs, with your tray on your knees, wasn't how you expected your last year of high-school to go, but perhaps you were the unluckiest individual inside that school.
You weren't that good at making friends, you even struggled a bit in social situations, not being able to maintain a conversation for more than a few minutes. Also there were some days where you felt uncomfortable eating with your classmates and this day was one of those...
You sighed loudly, noticing a dead bug laying on the floor next to you. Everything was so pathetic: your school, your classmates, your lunch... even you were pathetic. "This sandwich sucks and smells like feet."
"It's not that bad if you eat it in one gulp, without breathing." An unfamiliar voice startled you: a tall, lanky guy with red hair was sitting on the flight of stairs above yours, holding your same sandwich in his right hand. A bored expression on his face, his eyes wandering around the place without resting, not even for a second.
"And who are you?"
"Just a dude that wants a quiet lunch." His sunken eyes finally stopped wandering, watching your every movement. There was something unsettling about that guy, and the fact that you didn't even perceived he was there weirded you out. "My social battery just died."
"Then why are you here if you want to be alone?" You raised one of your brows, finishing your lunch soon after.
"I said I wanted a quiet lunch, not that I wanted to be alone." He rectified, smiling. There was something weird about his smile and his expression, something that scared you.
"Not so quiet now that we're talking."
"I enjoy a bit of company if it's not overbearing or annoying." He chuckled, biting a chunk from his sandwich. The guy was still staring at you with his big, red eyes, you could almost feel them piercing through your skull and it was making you uncomfortable.
"Well, I'm finished. Bye..."
"See ya!"
You walked away from him with your heart pounding hard inside your chest, returning to your classroom. You had the feeling that you knew the guy, his face was familiar after all, but unfortunately you couldn't picture where you'd seen him.
The following days you interacted again with that guy during lunch time; his name was Satori Tendou and he usually ate his meal in the same spot as you did. At first you were a bit scared of him, after all the fact that an eerie grin was constantly plastered on his face wasn't really helping, but soon you began to bond with him, understanding that he wasn't a mean dude but just really weird. That didn't bother you, after all you felt like you weren't normal yourself. Nobody ever was.
He was tall and lanky but his arms and legs looked well built, muscular enough to break you in half or slam you to the wall... You usually didn't have weird thoughts about the people you met, but everything was different with Tendou: when he sat next to you, you could feel how strong he was compared to you, and perhaps the thought of being overpowered excited you more than you wanted to admit. Luckily it was just a fantasy, after all he was too nice to hurt you, despite the fact that he looked like one of those thugs you'd find on the street.
"You heard of the upcoming school party? It's gonna be this evening." He asked you nonchalantly, scratching thr back of his ear. "The one to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Shiratorizawa. It's gonna be a big event, the location they chose is awesome."
"Wow, another boring social event!" You snorted, looking at the poster that was in front of you that depicted the drawing of a guy playing volley. "I won't be going, I always get bored during these kinds of parties."
"Oh..." Tendou almost looked disappointed for a second, but his expression suddenly changed into his usual grin. "What a shame. I even wanted to invite you to go with me~"
"Over my dead body."
You appreciated his offer. You really did, it almost made your heart skip a beat, but nothing in the world was going to change the fact that the school party was going to be the lamest event of the year.
"Come on, let's go together! I know how to make a party enjoyable."
"Satori, you won't convince me. I'd rather go to the carnival or the karaoke tonight, a party is too much."
"Well..." Tendou wrapped his arm around your shoulders, pulling you closer. The contact made you shiver, you could feel how warm and soft his body was against yours. "You want to go to the karaoke, I want to go to the party. We need to find a way to decide where we should go... perhaps arm wrestling?"
"You're way too strong for it to be fair." You chuckled, pinching his bicep. When you two made eye contact you noticed that there was something different inside Satori's eyes, but couldn't understand what. "We should find another challenge."
"Well, what do you suggest?"
"Hmmm..." you started massaging your chin as you wracked your brain in order to find something that was fair for the both of us. Your eyes wandered again on the poster of the guy playing volleyball, a grin appearing on your face. "What about a volley match?"
"Pffffft AHAHAHAH!" Satori couldn't hold his tears back, trying hard not to burst out laughing. He had to hold his stomach to stop himself, his eyes still watery. "Are you serious? You want to challenge me to volley match?"
"Yeah, I was kinda good at it in middle school..."
"Well, if you're so sure." An eerie smile was now deforming Tendou's lips, you felt a shiver ran through your spine, almost as if you made a big mistake. He pinned you to the wall, holding one hand above your head to show his dominance. "But if you lose then... you do as I say."
"Pfff, I won't." You tried so hard to maintain a neutral expression when your insides were on fire: what was going on? Why did he suddenly reacted like that? God, he was so hot that he almost turned you on. "Let's meet after school at the gym... so I can prove you that you are a loser."
Tendou didn't even bother you with an answer. He just kept smiling at you, not breaking eye contact. He then walked away without saying a word, whistling cheerfully... oh, you were going to shatter every single ounce of that confidence of his until there was nothing left. You wanted to wash away that annoying grin from his face, perhaps that was the day you finally made him realize that messing with you was a mistake.
