The night sky was yellow as me, Percy, Grover, and Annabeth walked through the woods along the New Jersey riverbank.
Grover was shivering and braying, his big goat eyes turned split-puppies and full of terror. "Three Kindly Ones. All three at once."
I patted his back, apologizing. I felt really guilty. Was it my fault this happened?
Annabeth was pulling us along, saying, "Come on! The farther away we get, the better."
"All our money was back there," Percy told her. "Our food and clothes. Everything."
"Well, maybe if you hadn't decided to jump into the fight—"
"What did you want me to do? Let you get killed?"
"You didn't need to protect me, Percy. I would've been fine."
Before they could continue arguing, I held up my arm. "Stop it. This is my fault. I shouldn't have come."
Percy looked dumbfounded. "What? Why?"
"I obviously caused this to happen. The curse is already starting, and it's because I'm here. I feel especially stupid considering I never really believed in this curse."
"Hey, don't talk like that! At least we're all alive still," Percy reasoned.
"For how long? It was selfish of me to come. If I was a true friend, I would've believed that when you returned, you'd still be my friend. But I was too anxious and scared to wait. I just didn't want it to happen again..."
Annabeth and Percy both frowned. Grover stopped braying and started patting my back.
"(Y/N), we're a team, remember? We're in this together. I probably wouldn't feel as safe if you weren't here. And even if something bad happens, I wouldn't blame you," Annabeth told me.
"Yeah. I already told you, it will be my fault. I'm the leader, and I chose you to come," Percy added in.
I didn't feel any better. "I appreciate that, but still... If anything does happen to you guys, I would feel so guilty. I shouldn't have come. I need to go back."
Grover grabbed my arm and stared at me. "You can't. You're going to walk all the way back to camp? With monsters roaming around everywhere?"
Annabeth crossed her arms and smirked. "Looks like you're stuck with us, whether you like it or not."
"I just don't want to endanger any of you..."
Percy put a hand on my shoulder. "I'm the leader, so I'm responsible. None of us would blame you for anything."
"We four are a team. You and I were the original members. Then Percy and Grover joined in. I like to believe it was fate that did that. We were always meant to do this together, (Y/N). And if this quest is cursed because of that, then we were fated to fail. But guess what? Our quest isn't over yet," Annabeth told me.
I slowly nodded. I still had a bad feeling, but I did feel a little better. I don't know how I'll react if the worst does happen.
"Thank you," I said. The three of them smiled at me.
We sloshed across mushy ground and through nasty twisted trees.
Annabeth fell into line next to Percy. "Look, I..." Her voice faltered. "I appreciate your coming back for us, okay? That was really brave."
