Layla Alaska

As I sat staring at the wall, my bedroom door creaked open, the sound of my mother's voice bringing me out of my trance. "Layla, can you come down and take August please? I need to get going."

I sat quietly for some seconds before turning to her. "Okay mom. I'll be there." She closed the door before leaving. I stood up from the bed, letting out a deep sigh. I quickly grabbed my journal and my phone before making my way downstairs where my mom was.

She was in the living room, trying to get August to eat his baby food. "Try feeding him more, he keeps spitting it back up. I really have to go now." My mother was dressed in a white long sleeve button up that was tucked into a pair of gray high waisted suit pants that matched her blazer. She was off to work, per usual. She wasn't around much during the evening. She works from three in the afternoon to eleven pm. I only ever get to see her during the daytime and weekends, but even then she's busy buried with work she brings home.

"Bye mom. I love you."

"I love you too Layla, goodnight baby." With that she was out the door. I let out yet another sigh. I turned to August who was currently wailing. I walked over to him, taking the can of baby food he was currently being fed. I scooped the banana and apple goop into the spoon, carefully shoving it in his mouth only for him to spit it back up. "Come on August."

After a hard five minutes of trying to feed August I had given up. I cleaned him up and tried putting him to sleep. It was hard to do so, but not impossible. He was out like a light after taking his bottle. I sat back down on the couch, grabbing my journal. I opened to a clean page, and began to write my thoughts in that moment.

I turned my head at the slamming of the upstairs home door. My aunt came through the door that was connecting our house with hers upstairs. She plopped down onto the couch next to me with a smile. "Hello Ms. Layla Alaska, what are you up to?"

"Hello Aunt Odyssey. I am just writing."

"How are you?"

"I'm fine."

She hummed with curiosity, "Fine good or fine bad?"

I shrugged my shoulders, "Just fine." She simply nodded, leaving the conversation at that. "What are you writing?"

She leaned closer to get a look at the writing in my journal, I quickly closed the book "Oh, nothing important."

"Aw you don't want to share with your auntie?"

"No, sorry."

"It's fine sweetheart, I'm just teasing. I'm going to head back upstairs, if you need anything ring my phone or just come up."

"Okay, thank you." I was left alone once again. I opened my journal back up and continued to write, that was until the same door opened. It was impossible to get peace and quiet in this house.

"What's up Layla." Saturn, my brother who was really my cousin but really my brother asked as he sat down next to me.

I closed my journal, accepting the fact I will not be getting much done "Nothing much."

"Where is Auggie?"

"He's asleep."

"I'm going out with the guys, do you want to come with?"

"No I can't. You have fun though."

He responded with an okay before getting up to leave the house. I sat back on the couch thinking about what I could be doing right now with everyone else. I could be out having fun, but I couldn't leave August. I shook my head at the thought and instead I opened my journal back up.

... I don't want to feel this way. How am I supposed to accept such a thing? It's impossible to do so, especially for a person like myself.

I continued to write until the sun had gone done. August slept throughout the day, I was thankful. It was now ten forty five pm, my mom should be here soon. I waited up for her because I missed her and I wanted to see her before I went to bed.

Twenty minutes later the front door opened, the sound of keys jingling about. I stood up from the couch, rushing over to the door. "Hey mom."

"Layla why are you still up? You have school tomorrow morning."

"I know, but I missed you. I just wanted to say goodnight." She set down her briefcase and slipped off her heels.

She walked over to me, pulling me against her into a hug. "I missed you too babygirl. Let's go to bed." We went upstairs to my bedroom. I laid down on the bed, my mother laying beside me. We laid in silence for a while until she spoke, "Are you ready for tomorrow?" My mood went down at the mention of tomorrow's events. I wasn't ready. I don't think I was ever going to be ready, but it has to be done.

"Do I have to be there?"

"Yes Layla."

"Okay." I sighed. She combed my hair out of my face using her fingers and planted a kiss on my forehead. "Everything will be fine I promise. How was August?"

"He was fine. Still asleep."

"Good. I'm going to leave you to sleep now okay? It's almost midnight." She stood up from the bed leaving my side. I didn't want her to leave. I felt empty and cold.

"Goodnight mom. I love you."

"I love you too Layla, Goodnight." She turned off the light and closed the door, leaving me all alone in the dark. I turn to my side and pulled the covers over myself to be protected.

It was impossible to fall asleep. I got off the bed, quickly turning the lights on. I sat down at my desk burying my face in my hands. My thoughts were too much. They were overtaking my body. Suddenly I found myself letting out silent cries. The tears pouring from my eyes unwillingly and the cries muffled by my hands.

Eventually I stopped myself from crying any longer. My head was aching. I rested my hands on the table and laid my head against them before finally falling into a deep sleep.
