Hia Lian checked the time again and glanced toward the door. It looked like his fiancée would be late today. He leaned back in his office chair as he thought of their last date.
Kuea had looked every bit as the young rich master he was in his gray suit. He walked the appropriate amount of paces behind Hia Lian and smiled constantly as if someone had taped his cheeks back all the way to his ears. If it wasn't for his clear and fair skin, Hia Lian would've likened it to the Joker's permanent clown smile. Hia Lian shivered at his thoughts.
He really didn't care who he married, but he'd made a promise to Kuea's grandfather that he would never break. He would never forget how the former patriarch had helped his family and so when he'd asked him to marry his grandson, Hia Lian had been unable to refuse. Not only because he was fond of Kuea when they were kids, but also because it had been an honor to be able to do something for Kuea's grandfather.
That's why as soon as Kuea returned, Hia Lian had added a ring to his finger signifying his commitment. Kuea had seemed happy to be with him and Hia Lian wanted to make him happy. It was just...sometimes Kuea seemed like a robot. Sometimes he made Hia Lian want to check underneath his clothes for the off button.
Take last week for example. It was Friday night - their date night - and Kuea was the perfect date. Smiles all night, said yes to everything and was perfectly understanding until Hia Lian wanted to tear his hair out.
On their last date, Hia Lian had to invite a business partner to speak with him and he was sadly unsurprised when Kuea quickly agreed to let her join them on their date.
Hia Lian smirked to himself as he remembered Kuea's fiery eyes when the beautiful woman had let her hand linger in his for longer than necessary. He had sat down and soaked in all of his reactions. Kuea didn't hide as much as he thought he did.
"Please take a seat," Hia Lian asked the woman.
She took a seat and exclaimed in a loud voice "Oh! You brought your brother here with you too?"
Hia Lian looked down at his engagement ring with a small smile. If only you knew.
"You're so cute! What's your name?" the woman asked excitedly.
Kuea gave a respectful wai. His eyes shot daggers at the woman, but she was entirely too clueless. Even when he said, "Hello. I'm Kuea Keerati. Mr. Lian's fiancée."
Hia Lian looked into Kuea's eyes, secretly amused that he had staked his claim so shamelessly.
The woman giggled. "You're so funny."
Neither of them insisted, but Hia Lian inwardly sighed. This was most people's reaction to their engagement. It was either funny or weird to them. Hia Lian didn't mind. The only people in his life he wanted to please was the man in front of him and his dead grandfather.
His business partner continued talking to him and Hia Lian kept peeking at Kuea as she kept touching his hands and being overly familiar with him. Hia Lian wanted to laugh when he heard Kuea clear his throat aggressively.
"Is it okay if I stay for lunch?" the woman asked shamelessly. She smiled at Hia Lian suggestively.
Hia Lian looked at Kuea. "Is it okay?" He wanted to be respectful of their time together. In fact, he was already regretting meeting this business partner in person. Next time he would send his bumbling assistant.
Kuea's tight smile gave Hia Lian hope that he would finally explode. Hia Lian silently begged him to say something. Say something. Tell her she's the one interrupting our date. Tell her to leave.
