We were pretty miserable that night.
We camped out in the woods, a hundred yards from the main road, in a marshy clearing that local kids had obviously been using for parties. The ground was littered with flattened soda cans and fast food wrappers.
We'd taken some food and blankets from Aunty Em's, but we didn't dare light a fire to dry our damp clothes. We didn't want to attract anything.
We stayed up for a little bit since we were all paranoid that something was going to show up anyway.
Percy was talking to Grover about the missing god Pan, while I asked Annabeth something that was on my mind.
"I've been wondering this ever since she told us her story, but didn't Poseidon, uh, you know, force himself on Medusa?"
Annabeth flinched at what I said. Percy stopped talking and looked back at me, a look of pure horror on his face.
"What?" Percy managed to get out. "My dad—?"
"That story's not true. At all. It was made up by the Roman Ovid who wanted to make the gods look as bad as possible. I hate whenever people bring up that. It also makes my mom look bad for cursing the victim." Annabeth looked annoyed.
"Ah, I see," I said.
Percy gave out a sigh of relief. He may not even know his dad, but I guess it's good to know that your father didn't actually do something that terrible.
Annabeth looked like she was about to fall asleep at any second.
"Hey, why don't you all go to sleep? I'll keep watch and we'll take shifts, okay?" I suggested.
Annabeth and Grover didn't argue with me. The second they laid on the blankets, they were out cold.
Percy stayed up with me. I tried to get him to rest, but he wouldn't budge.
"Listen, I'm sorry for snapping at you back in the warehouse," Percy apologized.
"It's fine," I sighed. "We had a rough day. Would it have gone like this if I hadn't come?"
Percy frowned and put a hand on my shoulder. "Hey, I already told you to stop thinking like that. We're all alive, right? I'm sure this is just how quests like this go."
I nodded my head. I guess he was right. "It's just...I don't know... Something's off about this quest, and I'm not talking about our luck..."
"Obviously something's off. I've been accused of stealing Zeus's Master Bolt which is crazy."
I realized something then. "Hey, what was the prophecy you got from the Oracle? I never got around to asking you that. You got a quest which means you had to have gotten a prophecy, too."
Percy seemed reluctant to tell me. Was the prophecy bad or something?
Finally, he spoke. "Uh, I'm going to go west and face the god who has turned."
I raised an eyebrow. "So, possibly Hades..."
He nodded and spoke some more. "I supposed to find what is stolen and see it safely returned."
Okay, I was surprised by that. "Really? That's good news, then! Anything else?"
He didn't say anything for quite a while. He looked at me and said, "Nope. That's it."
