For those of you who don't remember, Steve had encountered some threatening people while on his way to buy sweets for Adam, who is in the hospital, unconscious.
The feeling of panic suddenly hit him in the back of his neck. He tripped over his own shoelaces in an attempt to flee the scene, which he could sense was about to get violent.
Quickly pulling himself back up, he breaks out into a run. There was probably a better way out of this situation but in his terror he could think of nothing else.
He could hear the stomping of the dangerous people behind him, tailing him like a snake slithering through seven fields of grass to catch it's lunch. He squeezed his eyes closed for a second to cope with the vigourous bullets of wind being shot at his face, and it was at that moment, he knew, he messed up.
Knowing it was too late to change what had happened, he carried on running, prey trying to escape the predator. The footsteps behind him grew louder. They were getting closer. Hope was slowly leaving him, alone with no one but the people he least wanted to be with.
Tears welled up in his eyes, his legs started to ache. He knew he couldn't keep it up for longer. In his head, he was screaming for help, begging for anything to save him from the situation he was in. Suddenly, as if an omnipotent existence had heard his thoughts, a miracle happened. The one and only. Not a bird, nor a plane. Not even superman could even be compared in the slightest to him: Papy Johnny.
Hope returned to him almost instantly, and he was overwhelmed with relief at the sight of his saviour. The predators, gone, replaced with scared, cornered animals that cowered under the angry gaze of the tall figure towering above them. Without so much as another glance at their previous target, they flee, praying that the older man would not follow.
Steve could almost cry in relief. He had never imagined so much happiness could come from the sight of his grandfather. His grey hairs fluttering in the wind, his cape flowing like a flag symbolising victory and pride. Even the sight of his white, lightswitch-like face made Steve's heartrate slow down. "Are ya winnin', son? I see you had gotten yourself into trouble, so I can as soon as possible to spectate!"
A huge smile breaks out across Steve's face before he runs into his Papy Johnny's arms. The gratitude he felt was overwhelming as he thanked his Papy over and over again while they embraced.
Out of the blue, he realises something that he had forgotten. The sweets for Adam! It had completely slipped his mind that he had just fled from the hospital in fear of seeing his brother's lifeless-looking body.
He quickly pushes his grandfather away and runs as fast as possible, hoping that he isn't too late. Throwing a coin at the cashier as if playing baseball, snatching a bag of sour candy from the shelves, Steve's heartrate rose again. He sprinted lightning speed back to the hospital, with his well-trained legs.
Remembering to put a smile on his face for his brother, he strolled into the hospital room as if nothing had happened, beaming, and placing the bag of sweets into his brother's palms.
He sat by his brother's bedside whenever he was able, wanting to be able to pass him the sweets himself when he awakes. He sat there day after day, noticing the rings under his parents eyes growing darker, and the worry and fear in them growing.
But he remained faithful that his brother would be ok. His brother would never leave him. After nearly a week of waiting, watching, Steve noticed a change. Adam's hand twitched! He watched as his brother made more slight movements until his eyes jolted open.
"S... Steve?" Instinctively, Steve reached his hands out, prepared to jump into his brother's arms and hug him tighter than an anaconda snake, however his parents stopped him.
"BROTHER!" He shouted at the top of his lungs instead, struggling to contain his excitement. His heart leaped in joy so much that he could literally feel it prancing around in his ribcage.
"BROTHER, BROTHER!" He repeated, not fully being able to process it. In front of him, his brother, who was alive. It had been weeks, which felt like months to Steve. Shyly, Evie, who had been quietly observing by the bed, also ran over in a hurry.
"Brother!!!"
"Evie..." His voice echoed as if he were at the end of a tunnel. Adam, that was definitely him... He wasn't dead..."Evie." His voice was proof of that...
"Evie." Her eyes snapped open.
