CHAPTER SEVEN
DOMESTICATED MEL

Herrmann and I had been dating for two months, and things were going well. However, when it came to meeting his children, we had put it off for a while. He didn't want to introduce a new girlfriend to his kids, especially after they had lost their mother a year earlier.

Later that day, Christopher picked me up from work and drove me to his house. As we walked up the stairs, I began to feel anxious, which didn't go unnoticed by him.

"Hey there," he said, flashing me a reassuring smile. "They're going to love you as much as I do."

"You sure?" I asked nervously, and he stopped in his tracks.

"Yes," he replied, placing his hand gently on my arm. "It'll be fine."

"OK," I said, smiling back at him as we continued up the steps.

Before we walked in, he unlocked the door, and we were met with the sound of children's voices – loud, but full of life. They seemed happy, at least.

"Hey, guys!" Christopher called out, but they barely acknowledged him. Raising his voice slightly, he repeated, "Kids!"

"I'd like you to meet someone," he said, and all the children turned to face him.

"You've got a girlfriend?" The eldest boy, Lee Henry, huffed before walking out of the room.

"Lee Henry, get back here!" Christopher shouted, but his son didn't stop.

"Sorry about him," Christopher muttered as I stood there, feeling the weight of the moment.

"You've met Lee Henry," Christopher continued, "This is Annabelle, Max, Kenny, and Luke." He pointed to each child in turn.

"Kids, this is Mel, my girlfriend," he said, taking my hand in his.

"Hi, guys," I said, trying to sound confident. "I come bearing gifts." I reached into my bag and handed each child a toy I'd bought for them.

"You didn't have to do that," Christopher said, looking a little guilty. "I guess I'll have to bribe my way in, right?"

I laughed softly. "Looks like it."

The kids immediately dashed off, playing with their new toys.

"Thanks, Ma," Christopher said, heading toward the kitchen and kissing his mother on the cheek.

"Of course," she replied with a smile. "And it's my chance to finally meet Melissa." She walked over to me and gave me a warm hug. "It's so nice to meet you, Mrs Herrmann," I said, returning her smile.

"Ah, I've heard about you," Mrs Herrmann said, her expression softening. "You work at Chicago Med, don't you?"

"Yes," I replied, standing there nervously.
