Luria P.O.V.

As I turned the page in my book, I heard the familiar

 "Hello! I'm home!"

I raced to the front door and into my father.

"Papa's home!"

I cried with joy. Suddenly, Celeste and Marlee rushed into us, joining the group hug.

"Aspen, really? - mama scolds standing in the hallway, - How many times have I told you to close the door?" Papa chuckles, "Oh, no hug for me? Just a scolding?" Mama rolls her eyes, "Girls, get ready for dinner. Peter should be home soon with the groceries."

We scurry past mama to get ready for dinner. As we set the table, there was a strong knock on the door. Papa opened it to show a man in a soldier's uniform. They talked quietly, and then the man left. Soon, Peter came home with the groceries and we sat down to eat. In the middle of dinner, papa cleared his throat,

"Children, I have some very important news to share." There was a pause,

"I have to go join the army."

Everyone stopped eating and there was an eery silence throughout the whole household. Marlee broke the silence with a wail,

"Really?! Oh papa, will we ever see you again?" and she burst into tears. "I'll be leaving tomorrow, so I thought I should break the new to you now. "Papa? Why do you have to join the army?" I asked. "Yeah, aren't you supposed to volunteer, not being forced?" added Peter. "Yes, but since the Rineans have declared war on us, the king needs as many men in his army as he needs, though he is choosing certain people too."

After that, everyone at the table was quiet. Once we had finished eating, Celeste and Marlee cleared the table and I walked to my room with Peter trailing behind me. I walked across the room and stopped in front of the window, now covered in raindrops as if it were crying. That's how I felt.

"What's wrong Lu?"

Peter asked placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. I spun around and threw my arms around his waist crying. Peter and I had a strong bond between us for a long time once we started sharing a room. He picked me up and sat on his bed. We sat there for a few minutes, me cuddled in Peter's arms and then I asked,

"Peter? Why did papa say, 'the king needs as many men' and not 'as many people'?" Peter sighed, "Because women don't fight in wars and battles, only men do." "But why?" I whined. " I don't know Lu, but I bet you would be the best swordsman out there." replied Peter. "You mean swordswomen." I corrected teasingly. "There's my brave little lioness." Peter said as he started tickling me. I squirmed in his arms and tried to escape, but he wouldn't budge. Finally I gave in and yawned. "Yep. I'm tired too. Let's go to bed." Said Peter and set me free. I crawled into my bed.

"Goodnight Peter."

 "Goodnight Luria."
