It was 12 am and I had just finished listening to the man on the phone. I looked towards the security cameras, checking that everything was in order; all three of the toys were neatly, lifelessly, positioned on the stage. The bear, the bunny and the chicken.
I then made my way down to the closer cameras, reaching camera 1C, Pirate Cove. The sign read: "out of order"... and yet something inside of me wondered what was behind those sultry purple curtains.
Suddenly, a light scratching sound from the right corridor called my attention. A mouse? Or maybe just my imagination. Hesitatingly, I switched on the flickering corridor light, revealing the empty passageway. The building was quiet once more, except for the gently sound of the turning fan and the sound of my rapidly beating heart. I checked the cameras once more. The chicken-like creature had disappeared from the stage. Where could she be?
Another sound, this time coming from the left. I rushed to the light switch, but once the corridor was visible, I saw that it was also empty. Was paranoia beginning to drive me insane? I carefully tread back to my desk. As I was taking a swig of the coffee, already turned cold, I heard heavy breathing to my right. I turned the light on and there before my eyes was a monstrous vision of yellow and dripping jaws dressed in an apron that read LETS EAT!
I slammed the door shut. I was sweating from head to toe, and could barely recover enough strength to stand on my own two feet. What was that?! I breathed loudly into the dead of night. She was so... terrifying... and yet.... What was this feeling!?
"H-h-h-hello? W-w-who goes there?", I managed to cry out.
A low growl came from beyond the door.
"W-w-w-what do you want?"
There was a slight sniff from behind the heavy metal door. But then, the unmistakable sound of retreating footsteps.
I sank to the ground with my head in my hands, trembling.
After I had regained my strength and my heart rate had returned to normal I sat back in my chair and breathed in deeply.
"I don't know what's happening to me."
My words echoed loud around me in the small empty room.
