"An undocumented immigrant," He sighed

"An illegal immigrant," I rephrased and he shot me a look "What the hell are you going to tell the police?"

"I'll get my papers before they find out," he sighed

"Why are you doing this?" I questioned panicking

"My mom, she always wanted to leave France and come to live in America along with my sister, France is harder than you think, she sent me here on a ship with the little money we had left so that I could get a job and bring them here too, but when I got here I didn't have my papers, I've been working on getting it, but it's just so problematic and my mom has no idea how hard it is, she just wants to come here with Giselle so she can give us a better life, Code blue basically means "

"So you have a sister called Giselle?"

"Yeah,"

"And you don't have money nor actual right to stay here in America,"

"Yes," He sighed

"I'm sorry, this is too much to take in," I sighed and I made my way for the door as he pulled me back

"Please don't tell anyone,"

"I won't but right now I can't talk to you my mind's a mess,"

"It's fine, I understand if you don't even want to associate with me, but are you okay to drive?"

"Yeah," I nodded giving him a small smile before exiting the room

He was a... I couldn't think of anything more dangerous, he could be in serious trouble if he was caught! unless he got his papers before that...

The drive home felt too long and when I got home my dad's face was all I needed to know that I was out past curfew.

"You're late,"

"I'm sorry dad my friend had an emergency," I sighed walking past him

"Who?"

"You don't know him," I sighed

"Him?" he frowned staring at me "What kind of emergency?"

"Family problems, can I go to my room now?" I sighed making my way for the stairs

"Good night," he replied and I knew I was excused

I got up to my room and locked the door behind me opening my drawer and pulling out a packet of weed. I rolled it up before lighting it and making my way to the balcony for a quick smoke.

What he was doing was way too risky, but the way he looked, he looked so determined, why would he want to live France and come here to America? What the hell was so special about this place?

My mom always wanted to leave France and come to live in America

I sighed rubbing my temples

Could I just leave him on his own?

...

A good three weeks of pondering passed by, Lee came to school regularly but we never exchanged words and I guess he understood how I felt. He looked disheveled and I kept putting myself in his shoes. If my friend left me hanging dry after I told her such a big secret I would probably resent her.

I took the first huge step in my life that weekend to help Lee.

I got a job at a coffee shop.

I took my job letter to school the next week and class had ended when I walked over to Lee's seat beaming.

"Hey," I smiled at him

"Hey," he replied still focused on his book and I pulled out the letter placing it in front of him and he frowned

"You got a part time job?" he frowned

"Yeah, to help you with some extra cash," I smiled and he stared at the paper for a long time before looking at me and his eyes were glossy

"Thanks," he smiled giving me a hug

"You're welcome and I'm sorry I didn't say anything to you for almost a month,"

"I understand," he shrugged taking a seat

"Don't tell anyone about my job though, I don't want my friends to get suspicious,"

"I don't even talk to them," he laughed

"Just don't tell okay?"

"Yeah," he half smiled

"And no stealing cars again okay?"

"Yeah," he smiled

...

My first week at work was exhausting especially trying to balance my home work with it. Whoever could do it had to be a genius. I and Lee met up sometimes to work on our assignments. Since I had my own car my friends couldn't suspect a thing except the constant sleeping at lunch.

"Guys I'm going to apologize to Mel for taking her duties away from her,"

"Yeah and you should also apologize to us for always sleeping at lunch," Vivi replied

"And also for ditching your date with Justin last week," Ana added slamming her locker shut

"School is stressing me out," I defended and Vivi rolled her eyes

"Anyways, let's go find Mel, so you can apologize," Ana replied

After checking classes we decided to check the parking lot in case she was already heading home. Normally Mel would watch us during our cheer leading practices but we've been having a lot of fall outs so she hasn't been coming.

"Hey Mel!" Ana yelled waving at her and I spotted her and Connor in the parking lot talking about something.

Her head jerked up and she turned away from our view for a couple of seconds before facing us with a neutral face.

We walked up to her and I gave Connor a small smile before facing Mel.

"Mel, I want to apologize for taking over your responsibilities, I was just trying to help,"

"It's fine," She sighed

"Okay, can we get a hug?" Vivi questioned and she gave the three of us a hug a small smile forming on her face.

...

"So no more rides home since you have your car," Vivi replied as we walked towards my car

"See you tomorrow," I smiled and waved to Ana and Vivi before getting into the car and heading for work.

I got home a little late, New York traffic was thick as usual.

"Dad?" I called out walking into the living room

I saw my mom curled up on the couch sniffing with a box of tissues in front of her.

"Mom?" I frowned "What's-"

My dad emerged next to me placing his hands on my shoulder.

"Dad, what's wrong with mom?"

"Kate is dead,"
