Smoke. Fire.
It took a lot of effort for me not to break down in tears as I watched my home being engulfed in flames. Mama had told me to be brave but I could not even bear to watch as she was cut down and thrown in the roaring flames without a second thought, I had felt as if my heart had been ripped out as well
"When they come, show no fear." She had said. "Keep your head high and remember to be strong."
How could I be all these things when I could not even sleep at night without my nightlight, physically I was tiny, narrowly escaping dwarfish. I was labeled as a runt in the pack which was true because I did not have the physical strength needed to be a true wolf. Not that I had had any real connection with my wolf spirit.
I never knew my father though mama had said he was a great hero in the pack and had died protecting the pack. We had no pictures of him and mama never told any stories about him, the more I grew the less I stopped asking, and the more I noticed the sadness and anguish she felt anytime I mentioned him.
Sometimes I would find her sitting on the rocking chair by the garden window, a gentle breeze blowing her blonde tresses and a distant look in her eyes. She never joined in pack meetings nor did she associate with them, for all my life I had felt like an outcast in the pack till the day they came. The day I lost my will to survive.
The night before they came mama had sat down at the fire hearth, staring into the flames and I had understood then the pain and sorrow reflected in her eyes. She had looked at me then and smiled telling me what a sweet little child I was when I had brought her a hot cup of jasmine tea. It was her favourite.
She held me close to her bossom, her tears dampening my hair, telling me she loved me and to be brave. I had been scared, prodding her to explain what was going on but she had silenced me and placed her pendant on my neck, it was an emerald gem engraved on it was writings which I could not understand. Mama had always worn that pendant and at times I would find her holding it with a farway look in her eyes.
I had always felt that pendant was connected to mama's wolf, though i had never seen mama in her wolf form. Once I had asked her why she refused to join in pack meetings and hunting, she smiled then and said, "I left that life a long time ago, O'mara, it was a decision I had to make."
That night mama had tucked me into bed as usual, she kissed my head and covered me with my blanket. Then walked downstairs, it was just as every other night.
Loud and shuffling sounds woke me up, the sounds came from downstairs and i stood up immediately to find mama.
Three hefty men had dragged mama outside and I had followed the back door and hidden in the trees watching as the men had surrounded mama. Fear coursed through my body and I felt numb. Then as if she sensed my presence, mama raised her head and we both locked eyes.
Mama had smiled at me, even when a knife was placed at her throat. Her lips moving and only I could make out the words, "I love you." Then her throat was slit.
"MAMA!!!!" I could not remember when I opened my mouth or how my body moved, running towards my mama.
The men had all turned after they had noticed me, one of them had moved towards me apparently to get me.
"Leave her, we have no right to kill her Kazak."
The man stopped right in his tracks, "but she has seen us Alpha, we can't let her go!"
The one who had been referred to as "Alpha" walked up to me, jerked my head up, and stared into my eyes. His eyes were a piercing mix of blue and green, and I felt the intensity of his stare right in my soul.
"Your life has already been paid for twice young cub," he said, "let it be worth it."
In a flash, they were all gone and I felt like I had been awoken from hypnosis, all that was left was the ashes of my entire life and the eerie silence of the night................
Emily! Don't go too close to the lake or you might fall in!"
A pretty blonde girl wearing a pink floral gown and matching shoes burst through the front doors of a well-kept cottage, laughing loudly and bubbling with energy.
"Emily!" The girl stopped and called out to the voice inside, "I heard you, mum." she said, " you don't have to worry about me."
"Okay, but be careful."
With that Emily tore through the woods with reckless abandon, she was a fast runner and had often beat the boys in races though none of them ever admitted defeat. Ha! Boys!
Summer was in full swing and the water in the lake would be warm for a swim, Emily hadn't bothered to pack lunch because she could shift in her wolf form and hunt for lunch.
Earlier that day, her friend Quincy had popped by the house for a bite, typical of him! Quincy was a hopeless glutton but he made up for that by having a great wealth of information.
The blood moon was close and preparations for celebrations were underway, it was at that time young cubs were inducted into the pack. The wolves would be tested for strength, bravery, and loyalty, the moon goddess was rumored to bestow upon the aspiring wolves special abilities once they had passed the test.
Emily smiled, she was going to participate in the test if Quincy's 'information' was valid.
Becoming a member of the pack would give her a lot of rights and opportunities, at 15, Emily was already used to shifting in her wolf and was a deadly hunter due to her small build and speed. She would be able to attend meetings and take part in pack activities, she could also train to be a warrior and that was what Emily set her mind to do.
She was strong and everyone and everyone knew it, her father had been the previous Beta and had come from the bloodline of the Alpha.
She was almost close to the edge of the river when she heard sounds in the forest, twigs snapping and leaves shuffling. There were footsteps, and not just one person. Emily crouched in a defensive position.
Rumours had been flying that rogues had been seen at the borders of the pack and Emily was not going to throw caution into the wind, the steps were getting closer and she could hear voices. She considered hiding but there were no good hiding places, running into the woods was not advisable not until she had a view of the intruders.
Finally the intruders were out and Emily breathed a sigh of relief. "What the hell are you two doing here, I could have almost attacked you?!" She groaned.
"Yeah right!" Quincy snorted and almost immediately he received a smack on his head.
"Ow! What was that for?!" He cried out, holding his head and glaring at Thiana who ignored him.
"We're sorry Emily, we were just at your house and your mum said you might be here." Thiana explained.
Thania had a dark colouring with huge dark eyes and sleek ebony hair, always cool and calm she possessed the attitude befitting of the alpha's daughter.
"It's okay, I guess I was a bit scared." She looked pointedly at Quincy who was about to say something but quickly shut his mouth.
"So what brought you guys here?" They were sitting now at the edge of the river. The sun reflecting on the waters surface gave off a beautiful appearance.
"Well we thought it was a lovely day to see your fat, ugly face and- don't try that!!" He said sharply to thiana whose hand was raised in the air, obviously to smack him again.
"Then would you stop with the insulting?" Thiana growled lowly. "Please." She added in a soft voice and pleading eyes, it was so adorable how like a balloon, apparently thiana had a special way with quincy that no one had.
"Fine, sorry Emily." He murmured.
"You're sure you mean that?" Emily asked.
Quincy snorted loudly. "Not in a million years!"
"Then apology accepted." she snickered.
"Oh, it better be!" He retorted.
"Okay, I think that's enough before I get a headache." Thiana said with a wry smile.
Emily studied thiana closely, "you still get the headaches?"
Shaking her head, she replied "I haven't had them for a while."
"Any word about Dean?"
"No."
Dean was the first son of the alpha and the next heir, though he had run off a while back apparently gone rogue. There had been search parties scouting for him but no one had seen him.
"Father's been so worried be lately, especially with the blood moon coming up, Dean should be there for his coming of age ceremony." Thiana said. "It's been four years and not a word of him."
"I'm sure he's fine thiana, Dean's one hell of a wolf. I'm pretty sure he's cozying up in a high end town and partying all night long." Quincy said, nudging thiana which made her laugh. Emily smiled as she looked at them, they were good for each other.
A shadow caught her eyes and she immediately turned to look.
"Uh guys?!"
"What?"
"There's someone staring at us over there in the trees."............................
