The familiar disappointment in her brown, yet cold eyes didn't bother me, it never really does.
"How can you skip classes again, Y/N?"
"Why not? I'm not like you, Ai-sama, no one really cares if I attend or not.
"I do, and you are coming!"

Ai Kuran, my best friend since childhood, never tolerated being seen with failures. As the firstborn daughter of Kaname and Yuki Kuran she had all the right not to. I met her when I was still human, I loved playing with cats, just like most children do, and she found that amusing. Every day she would come watch me do my human activities, sometimes her beloved half-sister would join too. She watched me for weeks, we would even make eye contacts occasionally but none of us would say anything. However, my mom saw her too and being the kind soul she always was, she invited her for dinner one night. Surprisingly, Ai accepted.
From that day, my 7-year old self enjoyed the company of a much older vampire princess almost every evening. I wasn't afraid of her at all. At the time, I didn't understand why she found me so entertaining, I just thought I was special. Somehow, unfortunately for her sister, we became even friends over time. On my 12th birthday, she decided I was finally ready to meet the rest of her family for the first time.
I learned that Yuki Kuran and her then-partner, Zero Kiryu, were important people in the vampire world, but I wasn't aware of the amount of power they held. Despite her status, Yuki-sama treated me like her own child from the first day, but I can't say the same for her mate.
The vampire hunter never acknowledged my existence, I could spend days at their house with his daughters and those lavender eyes would never glance my way, not even once. I can't say that didn't bother me at first, for some reason I've always craved attention from the man. Unfortunately, over time I just accepted that expecting respect from him was simply unrealistic.
My life was pretty much idyllic for the next three years, both my mom and dad eventually grew fond of Yuki-sama and her children, Ren stopped being jealous of me, too! I even transferred to the Cross Academy; I always wished my uniform were white instead of black though. The only thing that occasionally disturbed my happiness was the cold, almost non-existent, treatment from my best friend's stepfather.
However, when I turned 16, my life drastically changed. Dangerous conflicts between humans and vampires started and on top of that, Ai went to her biological father and took Ren with her. Kaname-sama had awakened, and I was left alone.
My classmates were jealous of my closeness to the Kuran family so now I had no one but my mother next to me. One day as I was coming back from school, I got attacked by a level E, he got arrested after, but I was still injured. He was much stronger than a teenage girl, people wondered how was I still alive. Somebody found me half-dead on the ground and brought me to my parents who asked the Kurans for help.
Fortunately, Yuki-sama let me drink her blood so I was a healthy, strong vampire when my friend came back with her father, Kaname-sama. That was the new beginning for all of us, Ai and Yuki got Kaname back, Zero lost his lover once again, and I got a white uniform.

"Why are you even here, Ai-sama, you graduated years ago?"
"I am here to accompany someone, so you better hurry up."
