The clock hit 7:00 am, and someone had just entered the laboratory. In front of her, she could see someone working on an experiment. He looked deep in thought, his hands slowly moving around on his desk, so she decided to walk behind him quietly.
"Don't think I can't hear you now!" He yelled. She flinched at his sudden words.
"I'm sorry Mark!" She replied. " I thought you were doing something important."
Mark smiled and turned to look at her.
"Don't worry about it, Lilac. How did you sleep today? Any nightmares?"
"Not today, fortunately."
"Well that's great, 'cause you got an important project today, remember?"
Lilac chuckled and walked toward Mark. "How could I forget? Do you know how long I've been waiting to test that puppy out? It could be life-changing if we get it right!"
And she meant it. As part of group 3, she and Mark were tasked to work on the most classified, and often dangerous, experiments. As lilac began to walk toward her chamber, she caught a glance at Mark's progress.
On his desk was a small Petri dish with glowing blue worms slowly slithering on them. Mark studied them with sharp, unmoving eyes as the worms began to move towards each other. Once they touched, the glow burned brighter, and the worms fused into one.
Lilac looked away as the worms fused, and upon looking back, the worms seemed to have two heads, became twice their original size, and seemed to have six eyes.
"Would you look at that? A success!" Mark exclaimed. It was his first experiment as a group 3 tester, and Lilac could see the excitement in Mark's face.
"Glad it worked out well. Maybe you could start working on even bigger things later on!" Lilac cheered.
"Oh come on, Lilac! This is just my first experiment. I'm ways off from where you're at!"
Lilac chuckled at the remark.
"Oh don't start comparing! I've been here for years!""Exactly! My next experiment is probably gonna be the same as this one!"
"Alright. Whatever you say. I'm going to start my experiment now. See you!"
"See ya!"
Lilac smiled as she began climbing the stairs to her chamber. "Alright, I have my hairband, goggles, gloves, and boots," she thought to herself. As she reached the top steps, her heart began to pound. She had been prepping this experiment for weeks, and today would be the big test.
Upon reaching the floor she stared at the door separating her and her experiment. The large, 5 foot door stared back at her with ínstense scrutiny. She took the hairband from her wrist and tied her long, brown hair into a bun. Taking a breath, she opened the door.
Inside were elaborate machines connected to wires upon wires. As she walked in, she glanced at her notes on the walls. "By connecting the neurons to a stable passing source, I should be able to successfully make a connection between here and a different location. The question now is where the second location would be," she whispered to herself.
She walked over to her desk. In front of it was a circular piece of equipment, resembling a portal. Around the desk were wires connecting the equipment to a small box on Lilac's desk. Lilac reached down to a small cabinet in her desk and pulled out a blue button. Her breathing began to race. She connected it to the box and took a deep breath in.
"Alright. Deep breath," she whispered. "If anything happens, you have your calming techniques and your medication. You'll be fine. Deep breath."
Lilac stood for a few minutes before she looked up at the equipment. After a few more moments, she pressed the button.
