Y/N spent the rest of her day looking through her old diaries, revisiting her memories, looking for something she had missed or paid no mind to at the time. It was 8 years of memories to go through the earliest being from when she left her father's home—mindless ramblings of a scared girl. She read till night fell, only taking a break for dinner. That night she locked herself in her room, reading until midnight drew near.

She changed out of her uniform into darker clothing, equipping herself with a small dagger for insurance and her gear, then quietly sneaking out through her window, using the cover of night to help her weave through the fields towards the location where Levi had taken her earlier. She swung herself onto a tree waiting and watching.

Y/N was prepared for any scenario, for all she knew he could show up with an ambush gang and she'd be fucked, or the man could not show up and she'd get ambushed. Either way she'd be fucked if she weren't careful enough. Her proficiency with the ODM gear and familiarity with the area gave her the higher vantage point regardless of whether they had a trap waiting or not.

Crouched on the tree she watched as the man walked into the open field. He looked left and right, scanning the area looking for people who may have potentially followed him. After confirming that he was alone he looked up, squinting his eyes. "I'm alone, Y/N," he announced. Still untrusting of him, she waited a little longer before revealing herself.

The two stared at one another just taking in one another's presence. "You look like shit, you old fart," Y/N opened jokingly as a way of greeting.

"You don't look any better," he retorted. Y/N chuckled.

"It's been awhile, hasn't it, Nigel?" She asked. She showed her half of the bark. "And you haven't forgotten..."

"Yes, it has." He stepped closer to her, showing her his half. "How could I forget? It was our little thing. Protect one another, for the protection of another." He discarded the piece of bark onto the ground, "So, how have you been, Y/N?"

"Good. I'm not dead; that's something to be grateful for everyday. What about you? I'm surprised you're still working for my father," she stated, a hint of bitterness in her voice.

"Your father only has a few people he trusts in the Military Police, if I left him he'd grow suspicious of my whereabouts. I know too much; helped him cover up too much. You know that he would hunt me down and in the process hurt your mother and the children."

"That's the risk you take working for the Devil himself." No sympathy in her voice. He chose to work for someone as vile as her father. It left a distaste in her mouth to find out that he still kissed her father's boots like a dog and she pitied him for it.

"You know I don't have a choice. Your father is a scary man. And I will reduce myself to his dog if that meant keeping your mother safe from him."

"Mum..." She trailed, her heart aches at the thought of her mother, "How is she? Did you tell her of my 'death'?"

He chuckled. "I understand where your stubbornness comes from. Your mother refuses to believe that you're dead. No body, no death, she said. She's a wonderful woman, mother and wife."

"You've gotten Mum and Toby out of that shit-hole, I presume?"

"I got her a nice place to live a little bit outside Stohess. The kids are going to a good school. They're living a life you wanted them to have."

She smiled, bowing her head. "And I will be eternally grateful for that." It felt like stones were lifted off her shoulders knowing her mother and little brother were alive and well. She just hoped that someday, when the threat of her father's wrath would die down, she could go home and beg for her mother's forgiveness for allowing her mother to feel the pain of losing a child for so long.
