Chapter 6
Emma spent every weekend in Storybrooke with Regina, and they quickly fell into a comfortable routine. Friday evenings were always reserved for drinks with Ruby at The Rabbit Hole, which usually ended with a very drunk Ruby needing to be driven home. Saturday evenings were round two of Ruby Lucas, which always included dinner and wine, with Regina kicking her out promptly at nine o'clock for some alone time with Emma. Sundays were always just the two of them, until Emma pulled herself away from Regina and returned to Portland, counting down the hours until she could drive back to Storybrooke to see her family. Each time it got harder and harder to leave, and most times Emma cried the entire thirty minute drive back to Portland.
Every night they fell asleep in each other's arms, after making love for hours, never bothering to get dressed before falling asleep. Each morning they woke with a smile, as they lingered in bed a little longer, unwilling to let go of each other to start the day, until their stomachs demanded they eat. The moments they spent together seemed to fly by in the blink of an eye, and the time they spent apart felt like an eternity.
One night, in the early morning hours, Regina was startled awake suddenly, her heart thumping in her chest for a few moments, not knowing what woke her. She had been in the middle of a deep sleep, enjoying a lovely dream about Emma, so she knew a nightmare wasn't the culprit. Next she thought maybe Emma had moved suddenly, but she was still in the exact same position they had been when they fell asleep a few hours ago. And then there it was, the familiar smell of the forest, filling her senses. She smiled wide, as she tightened her grip on Emma, kissing her neck softly enough not to wake her, before closing her eyes, drifting back into her dreams with ease.
"Good morning." Emma smiled, as Regina kissed her neck until she woke up.
"Good morning." Regina said, as she trailed her hand up Emma's stomach, settling between her breasts, holding her tight.
"I love waking up in your arms." Emma said, as she rolled over, facing Regina's smiling face, kissing her. "Can we just stay like this all day, until I have to leave?" She asked.
"Of course." Regina whispered, pulling Emma closer to her, taking a deep breath. "There's no place in the world I would rather be." She said, kissing Emma deeply. "There is something rather important we need to discuss, when you're a little more awake." Regina said, after they pulled away from each other a few minutes later.
"Is everything ok?" Emma asked, fear washing over her face.
"Yes, of course. Everything is fine. Great even!" Regina smiled, running her fingers up Emma's back.
"What's up?" Emma asked, pulling away from Regina slightly so she could see her face more clearly.
"You're in heat again." Regina smiled.
"Really? Since when? I can usually feel it when it starts." Emma asked, a little confused.
"As of three-fifteen this morning." Regina laughed.
"You know the exact time?" Emma asked, thinking this was once again another weird Alpha power.
"It woke me out of a deep sleep. I looked at the clock because I couldn't figure out what woke me. Then I could smell you and I knew." Regina said, smiling. "It's still rather faint so you might not be able to feel it yet. You are definitely in heat though."
"It woke you up?" Emma asked.
"Yes. Rather forcefully actually." Regina said, unable to stop smiling.
"I'm sorry." Emma said, running her fingers through Regina's hair.
"It's quite alright. I do not mind at all." Regina said. "However, we do need to discuss what this means, and what will happen in a few weeks when you peak." Regina said, her smile never wavering.
