Stepping out of the school entrance Kaira was surprised to find that it was not raining and in fact there were patches of sunlight peeking through the clouds. The only day she remembered to carry an umbrella and it was not raining.
Great, she sighed.
She adjusted the bag on her shoulder and began to make her way toward the school gate. She had stayed back to catch up on her homework and not because she wanted to avoid walking home with Sen. Or at least that's what she told herself.
It had been a day since their argument and neither had made an attempt to fix their relationship. Maybe she did overreact and hurt his feelings. After all, he acted from a place of genuine concern.
"This friendship is suffocating."
Sen's last words before he turned his back on her rang through her head and she felt her heart cave within her. Were those his true feelings? Or did he just say it out of anger? Did she carry a lot of emotional baggage with her?
Kaira shook her head to get rid of her thoughts revolving around him.
Her peripheral vision caught sight of a struggling figure. A smile stretched Kaira's lips as she jogged lightly towards them.
"Hey," Kaira greeted the figure in front of her, catching them off guard. "Want me to help?"
Without waiting for a response Kaira grabbed the books from the pink haired girl's arms and began to walk forward. The girl stuttered for a second before following Kaira.
"You really don't need to hold it for me," she protested, a deep flush painting on the apple of her cheeks.
Kaira peered down at her short friend. "You seemed to be struggling quite a bit plus I don't mind helping you out."
Luna stammered out a barely audible 'oh' and the two fell into a comfortable silence.
"I didn't know you were in a club," Luna said tentatively, breaking the silence.
"I'm not, I just stayed back to catch up on work you know," she replied. "How's your music club going?"
Luna nodded her head, surprised for a second that Kaira remembered what club she was a part of.
"Good. We learnt a new piece to play on the piano today."
Kaira turned to face her with a puzzled look.
"Piano? I thought you played the violin."
Luna smiled, happy to know that Kaira remembered the small details about her.
"I do. I play the violin, piano and the drums."
"The drums?" Kaira whistled. "That's hot."
Luna could swear she felt her heart skip a beat as blood rushed to her face at an alarming speed. She had half a mind to get onto her knees and beg Kaira to not suddenly say such statements without prior notice.
Luna chuckled breathlessly, looking anywhere but at Kaira.
"The carnival!" she exclaimed a bit too loud in a desperate attempt to change the subject. "Are you going?"
Kaira looked at the girl with amusement. It was so easy to see through her half assed act, she almost felt bad.
"Maybe." Kaira shrugged, recalling how Sen and her had plans of going together but now that would not be possible.
"Oh you should come! It would be fun." Seeing the giddy smile on Luna's face, Kaira cracked a smile of her own.
"Hmm you're right," Kaira nodded. "When is it anyway?"
"The day after." She replied. Luna suddenly took the armful of books from Kaira's grip. "I'll see you then, take care!"
With that the pink head disappeared in the sea of students leaving Kaira puzzled once again.
She's kinda cute, Kaira thought, exhaling an airy laugh.
On the way home Kaira decided to stop by the supermarket to pick up something for dinner. She however did not expect to run into a distressed looking Misa.
"Having a life crisis because you can't choose between grape and apple flavour, huh?" Kaira said, peering over the kid's shoulder.
A much predicted screech left Misa's mouth.
"Ugh Kai!" Misa said, placing a hand over her heart. "I almost mistook you for some creepy old man."
Kaira considered the pros and cons of taking offense to the statement as Misa made exaggerated gagging sounds.
"Okay, firstly shut up and secondly we all know banana is the supreme flavor." Kaira said, crossing her arms.
Misa instantly stopped her gagging and turned to face Kaira with a blank look.
"You're weird." She muttered after a pause.
Kaira could not help the fact that she felt a stab to her chest due to the fact that she did not pass the vibe check of a Twelve year old.
"Bitch-"
"Oh by the way," Misa started, cutting her off. "Did you and Sen fight again? He's been moping around for a while and honestly it's starting to get on my nerves."
Kaira scoffed. "What do you mean again?"
"You guys have an argument like every other week." She rolled her eyes. "It seems like a routine at this point."
Kaira momentarily wondered if this is how Sen felt when talking to her as she had been told on multiple occasions that Misa and her were similar in more than one way.
Kaira groaned inwardly when she caught her thoughts wandering to Sen the second time that day. Deciding she needed to busy herself with something, she turned towards Misa with sparks of excitement in her eyes.
"Hey you wanna come over and help me choose what to wear at the carnival?"
In a heart's beat Misa was replicating her giddiness and vibrating with new found energy. "Oh my god yes! Let's go. right now."
And with that Misa's candy was forgotten as she dragged Kaira out of the store while talking a mile a minute. Kaira smiled softly before joining her shenanigans, Sen long forgotten in the eye of her memory.
