this is not necessary to read, in fact i would hate to spoil any illusion! so if you would not like to hear words directly from me 'breaking the fourth wall' as such then by all means, please only read the story/stories!
i just would like to quickly clear up or clarify a few things surrounding my Undaria/Radiohead story.firstly regarding the place in which it is set: the river Whataroa. the name is taken from a town in New Zealand, however the story is not necessarily set in New Zealand. i am purposefully vague about the large-scale setting because i believe the story could take place near anywhere, and i like to leave it up to the reader's imagination (i have to leave something up to the reader's imagination).
i am very interested in the connection between Irish people and Māori people in history, and also very interested in New Zealand as a country.
so my story, which is very loosely based off of Irish legends about Selkies (and many more legends of sea-dwelling creatures), and the setting having a potential blend of New Zealand and Irish climate and town, simply very very slightly reflects that area of interest for me. the story however, could be set anywhere. i am only explaining the name!secondly, the appearance of Undaria.
i scoured the internet for photos and artwork which reflected her nature, her surroundings, her appearance, for a very long time as best i could. her race (although she isn't human so a presence of race for her is debatable) is completely up to the reader! i do not want to present her as white, and i would like people to project their own ideas of her appearance onto her. the same also goes for her weight and body type. very sadly, all of the artwork i could find that were in the style i was looking for ALL featured thin, white, able-bodied women. this is most likely because the illustration tarot-like style of artwork which suits Undaria was mostly made from between 80 and 150 or so years ago, in north-west europe. many of the artworks featured are by Arthur Rackham, who was born in 1867 and died in 1939 in England, and many of the artworks are illustrations depicting the character Ophelia. if i find more diverse artwork which is in this style it will be featured in the future.the timeline: every song mentioned so far is from before 1996, and Thom's hair is described as ginger, so take with that what you will!!
when it comes to my plans for the future with Undaria, i love writing about her and i love writing about radiohead, so i could really keep going for as long as my fingers are able to type. i think there are endless possibilities for where Undaria could go and what could happen, so when i finish the radiohead story then i could always write a sequel, or another Undaria story independent of radiohead, anything really! my point is, Undaria will not be forgotten about.
