Zenitsu had always watched them from afar. The way one would smile warmly at his companion, eyes lovingly staring into the other's. The sight clawed at his fragile heart, the desperate feeling of longing increasing every time he witnessed such interaction.

He was envious. Zenitsu wanted to be the one next to him, feel his touch, claim those pink soft lips with his own. He wanted all of him. Yet, it seems that the boy's heart was stolen by another.

His eyes wouldn't glimmer its beautiful color around him; that sweet smile of his wasn't any way similar to the one he directed at Inosuke. Anyone could notice the difference between the affection Tanjiro offers both. The realization made Zenitsu sick to his stomach.

Damn his heart for feeling such intense emotions. For a boy that has absolute no interest in him.

He tried confessing to him on the day of love; Valentine's Day. But his attempt was in vain, seeing that Tanjiro had given Inosuke a bigger gift than what he received from him—a kiss. Zenitsu had witnessed their first kiss.

His heart dropped to the pit of his stomach, a wave of nausea hitting him as he ran away to the butterfly mansion, in search for the only girl that he felt comfortable with expressing his vulnerability. She was quiet but she was indeed a great listener.

And here he was again. With a broken heart.

"I don't know what to do anymore Kanao. Going on missions with them gets more unbearable each fucking day!" Zenitsu cries, glaring at the dirt below him. He was furious, with himself. If he had the courage to confess earlier then maybe, just maybe, a chance was given to him. But the fear was enough to drive the thought away, instead, burying those feelings deep down, hidden.

And now, Zenitsu only has him to blame.

"You should begin to move on, Zen. It will help you along the way and rid of the burden." Kanao softly says, a sad smile on her lips, "And.. I hate seeing you come to me with tears. I care deeply for you and your well being." She finishes with a sigh.

Zenitsu shakes his head, "No! I can't do that!" He rubbed an eye with a shaky hand, now turning his glare over to the raven haired girl. He was aware that Kanao was right, painfully right, but his ego peaked higher than a mountain.

And, he didn't want to let go of him. Not yet.

Kanao sighed once again, feeling guilty. It's always been like this; unable to help others. She was useless for these type of situations for she hadn't really experienced romance. Kanao found it unnecessary and a waste of time. Demon slaying and the safety of the people are her top priority, so, seeking for a lover wasn't on the agenda.

  It would never be.

"Look Zen, I may not understand or know how it feels because I've never fallen in love before or even felt any romantic feelings towards anyone." She managed, immediately composing herself. "But, I do know that you should value your worth and focus on yourself before anyone else. You  need to."

Zenitsu remains silent, the gut-wrenching feeling eating him whole. He felt like an empty shell.

He turns his head to the right, catching sight of both Tanjiro and Inosuke from afar, and he wish he hadn't. The two were cuddling aside a tree, a bright smile plastered on both their faces. You could even see a faint blush on Tanjiro's cheeks if you squinted hard enough.

  They looked  perfect  together.

And he really couldn't do a damn thing about it.
