Chapter 8: Strength

It had been about 6 months into the pregnancy and Oswald was feeling the pressure of this pregnancy. He sat at his desk alone in his office while his men stood there arguing about something he was planning for them to do. While his men were bickering Oswald was trying to suffer through his child having a squirming fit, kicking and thrashing about which was painful and frustrating because it just wouldn't end. Just below the desk so they wouldn't see Oswald had his hand on his stomach rubbing around trying to soothe the baby but nothing worked. Finally he had enough, he just wanted to alone. He slammed his fist against the desk and everyone grew quiet. "EVERYONE OUT!" He shouted as the men quickly responded and hurried out. "Argh! God! Could you quit!" Growled Oswald holding his stomach.
"Oswald?" Asked Edward as he knocked on the door.
"Come in." Said Oswald as he knew that Edward could think of something. The door opened and Edward stepped in closing the door behind him. Edward could visibly see how much pain Oswald was in so he walked over and sat next to him.
"Oswald I know this has been hard for you but just remember it'll all be worth it in the end." Said Edward as he leaned against the desk.
"Everyday I doubt that statement more and more." Groaned Oswald as Edward realized what was going on. "This kid has no idea what sit still means." Muttered Oswald as Edward knelt down placing his hands on Oswald's stomach. Oswald felt the child shift once more but closer to Edward's touch then they were still. "I still don't understand why they do that for you." Said Oswald as though the pain had subsided he still felt a little ashamed that Edward handled this so calmly and he just got frustrated.
"I don't even understand it Oswald just know it works." Said Edward as he stood. Suddenly there was the crash of a window breaking down the hall, gunshots followed, but then it grew quiet, too quiet.
"What was that?" Asked Oswald as he looked at Ed.
"I don't know." Said Edward as he stared at the door.
"Well let's go check it out." Said Oswald as he carefully stood holding Edward's hand.
"Well maybe you should stay here." Stated Edward in a nervous tone worrying for Oswald.
"Ed I'm pregnant not made of glass." Stated Oswald and he grabbed his cane. "Plus why do you think I carry a gun?" Asked Oswald as he walked but he tapped the holster around his shoulder. Edward sighed and followed him though he found his cocky nature to be kind of irritating especially when all Edward was trying to do was insure Oswald and their child didn't die.

The two of them walked down the hall finally seeing three of Oswald's men laying on the floor. "Are they dead?" Asked Oswald as Edward checked their pulse.
"No." Muttered Edward as he stood. "But they do look beaten." Said Edward. "Could it be the Bat?" He asked as Oswald sighed.
"If it is we're screwed." Grumbled Oswald as he leaned on his cane. Suddenly there was the sound of rifling in the next room.
"What's in there?" Asked Edward.
"Just records from when I was mayor." Said Oswald as Edward sighed knowing if the Bat was here that's exactly what he'd be after. Edward reached down grabbing one of the guns and decided to rush in. He walked in the room and flicked on the light seeing Batman standing in the center of the room. Edward aimed the gun but he threw down some sort of thing that shot out smoke that blanketed the room. Edward began to cough backing away and closing the door but Batman kicked the door down while Edward still stood quite close causing Edward to thrown across the hall. Once Oswald saw him he hoped there was some chance for surrender knowing he couldn't take a beating in this state so he took his gun from the holster and dropped it on the floor holding his hands up.

Batman put the two of them in his car and drove to the GCPD leaving them at the front doorstep tied up. Eventually the officers found them and put them in the holding cells. Lee checked over Edward since he was the only one injured. "Does this hurt?" Asked Lee as she checked his wrist as she noticed he was cradling it.
"Yes." Stated Edward reluctantly.
"So why is Oswald unscathed if you don't mind me asking?" Asked Lee as Edward didn't think about keeping it from Lee until it was too late.
"Oswald's health requires some level of restraint from him." Muttered Edward as Lee wrapped his wrist. "God damnit why did I just say that." Edward said realizing his mistake.
"So what happened to Oswald?" Asked Lee as Edward decided to shut up knowing he said way to much already. "Look Ed I know you're not very trusting of me but if there's something wrong with Oswald I need to know." Said Lee as Ed sighed.
"Just know this there's nothing wrong with him. This was what he wanted." Lied Edward as Lee finished with Edward then as they put him back in the cell she watched him. Edward sat next to Oswald holding his hand being very kind and gentle with him which Lee found to be odd.
"So how's Ed?" Asked Jim as he walked up next to Lee.
"Just a sprained wrist he'll be fine but I'm a little more worried about Oswald." Said Lee as Jim looked at her.
"Why, you said he was unscathed." Stated Jim.
"That's why. Ed mentioned something about health concerns, I still feel like I need to check him out." Said Lee as Jim walked with her to the cells.
"Oswald go with Lee." Stated Jim as he opened the cell. Oswald stood and went with Lee to the medical examiner's office.
"Why am I here?" Asked Oswald as he sat in a chair in her office as she started to check him out.
"You were brought in by Batman without a scratch on you, that's kind of a cause for concern since you're not much of a coward." Said Lee as Oswald smiled finding the fact that she didn't think he was a coward to be a compliment.
"Well I hate to admit it but I surrendered." Stated Oswald as Lee stopped and stared at him.
"That's also something I didn't except to hear from you." Said Lee as Oswald sighed.
"New times call for new measures." Stated Oswald.
"Really cause Ed mentioned something about health concerns." Stated Lee as Oswald rolled his eyes.
"Ed worries over nothing." Stated Oswald but he felt the worst possible thing happen at this moment, the baby started to move like it had before. Oswald glanced down and saw that both of them could see it move. He looked at Lee with a worried look and decided to admit it. "There may be some health concerns." Muttered Oswald as Lee looked just as concerned. As she checked Oswald out further because he refused to tell her anything else, the baby continued to squirm causing Oswald infuriating amounts of pain but he tried to bury his feelings just so Lee wouldn't catch on.
"I don't understand but some how you're pregnant." Said Lee but Oswald grabbed Lee's arm realizing he had no other option but to beg.
"Please don't tell anyone about this I'm begging you!" Pleaded Oswald as Lee sighed.
"Oswald I don't know if I can keep this from Jim." Said Lee.
"Why not?!" Growled Oswald as Lee sighed.
"Because we can't have you admitted to Arkham or Blackgate because both those places could easily cause harm to you and your baby but I'll have a helluva time explaining to Jim why we have to let you go without explaining your situation!" Said Lee as she felt Oswald's grip get tighter along with the movement getting a little more rapid. Oswald finally let go of her holding his stomach. Lee actually felt bad for him remembering when she was pregnant and knowing how hard this was on a person, especially if they were doing this alone. "Look." She said as she pulled over a chair and sat next to him. "Why don't you and I make a deal. If I keep you and Ed out of Arkham will you keep me informed about this?" Requested Lee as Oswald looked at her slightly confused.
"How does that benefit you in anyway?" Asked Oswald.
"Well for one if this ever gets out I'll have privilege to say that I was the primary care physician for a pregnant man plus I could just see that you nor Ed know what your doing." Said Lee as she stood as Oswald sighed.
"That's true." Said Oswald as he winced from the pain.
"Now do you need anything before I go and try to convince Jim to let you go." Asked Lee as Oswald nodded.
"Ed." Said Oswald so she had Edward removed from his cell and brought down to her office.
"Oswald!" Said Edward as he rushed over sitting next to him.
"Their restless again." Muttered Oswald as Edward placed his hand on the side of Oswald's stomach but he looked back at Lee with a grateful look.
"Thank you." He said softly as Lee nodded and went to explain things to Jim.
"Why in hell would I let those two go?!" Demanded Jim as Lee sighed.
"In Oswald's current condition he can't be admitted to Arkham." Said Lee as Jim dropped his tone.
"Well what's wrong with him?" Asked Harvey as both men looked to Lee for the answer.
"I don't know for sure but I just know his state is too fragile to be put be put in a place like that!" Said Lee sternly as Jim sighed.
"Fine." He said as Harvey stopped.
"But why do we have to let Ed go?" Demanded Harvey as Jim sighed.
"Actually as far as I can tell Ed hasn't broken a law in the last 6 months." Said Jim as he sighed.
"Great!" Grumbled Harvey so within the next few hours Jim had Oswald and Ed let go.

Lee drove them back to Oswald's mansion knowing full well that the Bat had dropped them there with no intention of them leaving like they were. "Lee we can't thank you enough for what you've done." Stated Ed was as sitting in the back with Oswald.
"I hate to say it but thank you." Said Oswald as he looked at Lee and though she was driving she nodded.
"Of course but I didn't do this for you, I did it for your baby. Their innocent, they don't deserve to born in Arkham and ripped away from their family almost immediately." Said Lee as Oswald Edward looked at each other knowing that's exactly what would've happended.
"Not mention when the staff found out they probably would've turned Oswald into a lab rat." Mumbled Edward as he rubbed his hand around Oswald's stomach keeping the baby calm.
"I didn't even think of that." Said Oswald softly.
"Exactly you wouldn't even be able to see your child until they were at least 6 years old or over. The poor thing wouldn't know a home just a lab." Said Lee as she pulled up the driveway of the manor. "Though I would like to keep in touch even after their born, I just want to be sure that their healthy." Said Lee as she turned to look back at Oswald and Edward.
"Of course, Lee. Honestly you're the only doctor we trust for something like this." Said Edward as Oswald nodded.
"Though Strange is the one that did this to me, he's too easily flipped against people to be trustworthy." Said Oswald as he sighed.
"Huh, Strange did this?" Asked Lee as Oswald nodded. "Honestly not that hard to believe." Stated Lee as she got out of the car while Edward helped Oswald get out. They got inside and Oswald sat in his office while Lee asked him some questions about the pregnancy though Edward answered most of them. "So how far along would you say you are?" Asked Lee as Oswald's mind was a blank, he really hadn't been keeping track.
"About 25 weeks." Stated Edward as he leaned against Oswald's desk.
"How far along were you when you started noticing the movement?" Asked Lee as Oswald thought about it but Ed answered before he could even begin to think.
"About 20 weeks." Stated Edward as Oswald huffed.
"How do you know more about my own body than I do?!" Barked Oswald as Edward smiled at him.
"I'm sorry I'm just very observant." Said Edward with a smile.
"How active would say the baby daily?" Asked Lee as Edward actually looked like he had to think about it.
"Very active. They have a fit every couple of hours, kid doesn't know how to sit still." Said Oswald as he sighed.
"Well sometimes stress and anxiety can effect the baby as well." Stated Lee as she took notes on a notepad.
"Well I don't think I've been feeling stressed." Said Oswald as Edward looked at him.
"Well stressed is kind of your normal and I've noticed everytime I've had to soothe them it's been after you've heard something about Joker." Said Edward as Oswald sighed.
"Joker does stress me out, he's too much like a Valeska and Jerome Valeska was terrifying." Said Oswald as Lee took note of that.
"Well just try to reduce your stress and hopefully they'll settle down." Stated Lee softly. After their chat they agreed the Lee needed to be kept in the loop about everything so Edward updated her on Oswald's condition as much as he could.
