warnings: brief profanity, blood, death, suicide

It all happened so fast. Your mother reached over to grab the gun from the man pointing it at Charlotte's head.. he fired. Your little sister was dead. Your mother was a strong woman, she was able to wrestle the gun out of the man's hands and toss it out of range before she was shot in the back of the head by the other burglar in the room. You reached forward to try and stop your big sister from attacking the man, but it was no use. She managed to get the gun from him and fired again and again until his face was unrecognizable. She turned her attention to the other burglar, who was scrambling to get his gun. One shot in the head, dead.

You turned to look over at the bodies of your mother and sister. It was.. hard to fathom that they were really gone. "..Em.. are they really-" You didn't get to finish your sentence.

The third burglar, the one that had left to grab the money from your mother's personal safe, re-entered the room. You both noticed him almost immediately, with Emery acting first. She raised the handgun she armed herself with and pulled the trigger. Nothing. There was no ammo left. She rushed to grab the other gun that your mother managed to toss to the side in her final moments.. but she wasn't fast enough. The burglar fired his gun. Emery staggered before falling to the floor. It wasn't long before she was dead too.

You were left alone. Sure, there was the other man in the room, but you didn't pay any mind to him. Your family was dead. They were all you ever had.. and they were gone. You did nothing to prevent their deaths. You didn't even try. You just sat there as they dropped to the floor one by one. You were weak. You could only stare in horror at their corpses, slowly bringing a hand up to cover your mouth. It took a bit for all of it to truly hit you, but when it did, you cried. Your sobs were so out of control that after a minute or two, you were gasping for air. You were left hyperventilating as the man in the room merely watched.

You slowly slid off of the couch, crawling over to the body of your younger sister, Charlotte. She was funny, sweet, and she never failed to make you happy. She was a little on the lazier side, but you didn't mind picking up her slack. Maybe, if you did something.. did anything.. you let out another loud sob, beginning to crawl over to your other sister, Emery.

You two weren't very close, but you loved her dearly. She graduated awhile ago, but she stuck around and worked to support your mother during times where money was especially tight. She died avenging your family, she didn't look even the slightest bit scared. That's what you admired about her. She was always so brave.. and you were a coward. You reached forward to move some of her long hair out of her face, using your other hand to wipe your eyes.

And last.. your mother. How could you forget her? She was the person you looked up to the most. She was a single parent, your father left not long after Charlotte was born. Despite this, she was a better mom than you could've ever asked for. Even while working multiple jobs, she made time for her kids. She was so caring and kind, she always put everyone before herself. It was why she tried to save her child, even if she knew that it'd probably end up with her dead. God, you wished that she would've just thought about herself for once, maybe the burglars would've let them live if they complied. You didn't have any place to talk, though. You did nothing. Nothing at all, even as your family was being shot one by one.

By the time that you stopped in front of your mother, you'd already forgotten about the third man. The man in question watched you for another minute or two before slowly turning his gaze to the other dead men. He turned his gun on himself, aiming it at his head. He there was a moment of hesitation before he fired.

The gunshot made you flinch, but you didn't even bother to turn around. The loud thud following the shot told you all you needed to know. Now you were truly alone. You could weep in peace.
