"Shepard" Kai nodded at Amelia as they walked into their chemistry lesson.

"Saved me a seat I see" Kai gave Amelia their wonky smile.

"Of course Bartley" normally Kai was the first to arrive to lessons, they were always eager, but today was different.

Today Kai went to the shop before class and bought a bouquet of flowers. Not for themselves but for Amelia.

They also bought chocolates Amelias favourite kind. They had an evening planned.

They were going to fill Amelias dorm room with candles. Owen was away for the weekend on an Army training camp.

So it left the apartment to Amelia and Kai. No interruptions.

Kai was planning on meeting her at the library where they'd give her the flowers and then take her back to her place and give her the chocolates after she saw the candle arrangement they had made. They had it all planned out.

After Amelia told them they'd never leave they figured they had nothing left to loose. Now was the time.

"You're focusing on something up in there" Amelia chuckled to herself as she stared at the look of concentration on Kai's face.

"Just thinking" Amelia tilted her head. "About...?" She asked.

"For me to know and for you to find out" they responded before paying their attention on the teacher.

"Good morning class" everyone replied with a chorus of good mornings

"today we won't be learning" Amelia looked at Kai in confusion at the teachers statement.

"You'll pair up and work on a project together" Kai looked at Amelia and smiled.

"Now this experiment sounds like one high school students would do, but it's very interesting and harder than you may think" he slid through some of the slides on the PowerPoint.

"Make a volcano. One that has something erupting out of it. Class dismissed early get cracking. It's due in two weeks time. Good luck" the students rose from their seats and left the classroom.

"This sounds exciting" Amelia gently bumped into Kai's side and smiled at them.

"Be my partner?" Amelia asked as they continued to walk back to Kai's dorm.

"Do you even have to ask?"

"Looking good Bartley. So. Game plan let's go through it one more time" Kai had told Tom everything about what happened between them and Amelia. They told them what she said and how they felt, and Tom had been their biggest supporter with the situation.

"I'm meeting her at six, I'll give her the flowers" they started as they paced the length of their dorm room. "You'll sweep her off her feet bring her back to her dorm, and she'll be absolutely amazed by the layout of candles, which I'll be setting up prior to your arrival" he added.

"I'll give her the chocolates and put a slow song on; we'll dance and then I'll ask her out" Tom jumped and raised his fist.

"Yes!" Kai smiled and gave Tom a high five.

"It's almost six you better get going" Kai nodded before grabbing the flowers.

"Good luck Bartley" Tom patted Kai on the shoulder before they left.

Amelia was waiting outside of the library a little earlier than intended.

She got bored so opted for some fresh air.

Kai was meeting her outside any minute. "Hey Amelia" Link made his way over to Amelia.

"Hey Link long time" she smiled at the boy before putting her hands in her pockets, her skin starting to feel cold as the breezy air of Seattle circled around them.

"You're alone?" Link asked as they stood closer to Amelia. "No I'm waiting for Kai" Link shook his head. "You know I've been meaning to talk to you about how I've been feeling ever since we got ice cream together" Amelia raised an eyebrow.

"How so?" She asked, she noticed Link was now mere centimetres from her face and couldn't help but feel uncomfortable.

"I'll show you instead" without Amelia having time to register links words his lips were on hers, she was too stunned to pull away.

Kai rounded the corner to the library and froze. Link was kissing Amelia, she wasn't pulling away.

Kai dropped the flowers catching both Link and Amelias attention.

"Shit. Kai wait" Amelia pushed link off of her and ran after Kai as they walked away.

She saw the beautiful flowers on the floor and picked them up.

"Kai!" She ran until she spotted them storming back to their dorm.

"Forget it Amelia" they shook their head. "Kai let me explain please" Kai stopped.

"Explain what? How his lips were against yours? How you didn't even attempt to pull away?" They rolled their eyes and continued their march.

"Kai please it wasn't what it looked like" they were now stood outside Kai's room.

"Save your breath Amelia" Kai opened their door and slammed it shut.

"Hey Kai" Tom turned to see Kai storming over to their bed. They tore their jacket off and through it to the ground clearly frustrated.

"Tom don't light the candles" Tom was surprised at their words but complied.

"Kai please come on" Amelia stood outside their dorm desperate for Kai to listen to her.

She stood there for 10 minutes waiting for them to open the door but gave in when no door opened.

She slowly walked back to her dorm flowers in hand a sad expression on her face. She opened her door and gasped at what she saw.

"Oh Kai" this was classic Kai. A romantic. Candles arranged  in the shape of a heart on her bed and the floor.

Rose petals arranged in the perfect pattern. Her eyes filled with tears at the thought of the last ten minutes. How could time lead to this?
