The warm breeze of a late September evening swept through the small town of Woodsboro, rustling the trees outside Casey Becker's home. The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the lawn. Inside, Casey and Madison Prescott sat cross-legged on the living room floor, textbooks, and notebooks spread out around them. The sound of laughter filled the room as the two girls attempted to study but quickly fell into their usual habit of chatting about everything and nothing.Madison, with her dark hair pulled back in a messy ponytail, leaned over to grab a handful of popcorn from the bowl between them. "Come on, Case, you're really gonna tell me you didn't see that coming?" she teased, referencing the horror movie they had just paused.
Casey rolled her eyes, her blonde hair shimmering in the fading light. "Not everyone is as obsessed with horror as you are, Maddie. I was actually scared for a second!"
Madison chuckled, tossing a kernel at her friend. "That's because you keep falling for the jump scares. Rookie mistake."
Casey feigned offense, placing a hand over her heart dramatically. "Hey, I'll have you know I have a refined taste in cinema... even if I do scream at every little thing."
Madison laughed, her eyes sparkling with mischief. They were close, closer than most people realized. Casey had been there for her when Madison's mother had died, and in return, Madison had always been Casey's protector of sorts, a confidante. It was why she was here tonight, just hanging out like old times.
The phone rang, breaking the comfortable silence between them. Casey reached for it, but Madison shook her head. "I should get going anyway. Sid's been stressed, and she'll freak if I don't make it home before dark," she said, gathering her books and standing up.
Casey made a mock frown. "You sure? You know you're always welcome to stay over. We can finish the movie."
Madison smiled warmly. "I know, Case. Maybe next time. Besides, I promised Sid I'd help her with some stuff tonight."
"Alright," Casey sighed, walking her friend to the door. "Be careful, okay? I heard there's been some weird stuff happening around town."
Madison smirked, "Weird stuff in Woodsboro? Tell me something new." They exchanged a hug, a little tighter than usual, as if sensing the unease that lingered in the air. "I'll call you later," Madison promised before stepping out into the dusky evening.
As Madison walked down Casey's driveway, she glanced back at the house, illuminated against the growing darkness. She had an odd feeling—a shiver that ran down her spine—but she shook it off as just the chilly breeze. She'd known Casey her whole life; nothing bad could happen to her. Right?
Madison climbed into her old, beat-up car and turned on the engine, the headlights cutting through the encroaching night. She drove away, not noticing the dark figure lurking just beyond the tree line, watching Casey's house with an intensity that sent chills through the shadows.

Later That Night
Madison had just finished her homework and was about to call Casey when she heard the phone ring downstairs. She jumped, her nerves still on edge from the horror movie, and hurried to pick it up. Her sister, Sidney, was already answering.
"Hello?" Sidney said, her voice uncertain.
Madison watched her sister's expression change from mild curiosity to concern. "No, I'm sorry. You must have the wrong number," Sidney replied before hanging up.
"Who was that?" Madison asked.
Sidney shrugged, looking troubled. "I don't know... some weirdo asking me what my favorite scary movie is. I think it was a prank."
Madison chuckled nervously. "Creepy. Maybe it's Randy trying to freak us out. You know how he gets around Halloween."
Sidney nodded but still seemed uneasy. "Yeah... maybe.
