Briana's POV.
Grandma's funeral was today, and it didn't really hit me that she was gone until they lowered her casket into the ground. Luckily, Cam & his family have been here for support, and I'm very thankful for them.I was standing outside, and I had just introduced Cam & his family to my favorite aunt & her husband. I managed to smile for the first time in a week, but it wouldn't last long.
"Hello Briana."
I know that voice. I slowly turned around to face the two people I never wanted to see again.
"Hi Mama. Hi Daddy."
"You've been home for a week, and you didn't drop by to see your parents once," my mom said, obviously disgusted. "Who's your friend?"
I sighed. "Mama, Daddy, this is my boyfriend Cam, his parents, Cecil & Jackie, and his little brother, Caylin. Y'all, these are my parents, Derek & Alisha."
My dad shook everyone's hand, but my mom was acting like she had a problem. She even had the audacity to give Jackie this God awful side eye, making my skin crawl.
"You play football at the school, right?" my dad asked Cam.
That's the thing about my dad. He wasn't "father of the year," but he wasn't as terrible of a person as my mom. I can at least tolerate him.
"Yes sir," Cam replied.
They talked about sports and what not, while I uncomfortably stood in front of the woman that gave me life.
"So," my mom said, catching my attention, "I heard you already graduated. I'm sorry we couldn't make it."
I mentally rolled my eyes because she's so full of it. She's only acting like she's the perfect mom because Jackie is standing here.
"Y'all didn't even come to my high school graduation."
My comment was laced with attitude, but I didn't mean for it to come out like that.
"Watch your mouth," she retorted, "I didn't raise you to be a disrespectful little brat."
"You didn't raise me at all," I mumbled.
My mom grabbed my wrist and yanked my arm, damn near dislocating my shoulder. And here comes the real Alisha.
"Alisha, let go of her!" my grandfather yelled.
Her grip on my wrist only tightened, and it honestly felt like she was about to break my wrist. I just hate that Cam & his family have to witness this.
"I am so sick of your little spoiled ass. It's because of you that my mother is dead. She stressed herself out worrying about you and that bastard child you're carrying and now she's dead."
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Cam take a step toward her, but his mom pulled him back.
"First of all, if you cared about anyone other than yourself, you would know that Grandma was sick for a long time. And are you, of all people, really gonna call my unborn child a bastard when that's exactly what I am?"
She was really quiet but if looks could kill, I'd be six feet under.
"But don't worry, Mom, I'll be a much better mother to my 'bastard child' than you ever were to yours."
All I felt next was the palm of my mom's hand connect with my face, and then I heard everyone yelling. I held my hand to my face as tears welled up in my eyes. It's like my childhood all over.
"Alisha, what the hell is wrong with you?!" my aunt, Audrey, yelled, "come on Bri."
My aunt wrapped her arms around my shoulders and walked me into the house. This is exactly why I steer clear of Alisha Williamson.

Cam's POV.
I don't know what just happened; I just know it happened so fast. One minute, Bri & her mom are going back & forth, then her mom just slapped her out of nowhere. When I saw Briana's mom hit her, I was immediately filled with rage, but I knew I couldn't hit her; I wasn't gonna let her disrespect my girlfriend though. I don't care if it's her mom or not.
I was about go off on her, but Bri's grandfather pulled me to the side.
"Go in there and talk to her," he said, putting a hand on my shoulder. "I'll handle her mother."
I nodded and did as I was told. I went in the house and went to Briana's bedroom. She was lying on the bed with her back toward the door, and her aunt was sitting on the bed with her. She motioned for me to sit with Bri, and I did.
I stroked her hair and kissed her temple, and she turned around to face me.
"Hi," she said softly.
"Hi," I said, lying beside her. "How are you feeling?"
She chuckled lightly. "My face stings, and I'm pretty sure my wrist is broken. I'm sorry y'all had to see that..."
I placed my hand on the side of her face and ran my thumb over her cheek.
"I'm sorry you had to put up with that for the first ten years of your life."
She smiled a little and wrapped her arms around my torso. "Thank you for being here for me," she said quietly.
"You know I'd do anything for you," I said in her ear, "I love you."
"I love you more."
I kissed her forehead, then her lips, and we just talked until she eventually fell asleep.
