A while after Andrew leaves, I decided so should I. When I come out from the room, everyone is gathered in the living room, all thinking about their own theories to what could have happened.Everyone except Payton.
"Where did Payton go?" I asked.
"She's outside." Miles replied without even looking up. I quietly stepped out the front door and saw Payton sitting on the wooden steps. I sat down next to her.
" You didn't need to come 'rescue' me you know? I'm perfectly fine without you here." Payton said, never looking at me.
"I know. I'm just enjoying the fresh air." I replied. In all fairness, I was enjoying the air. But that's not all I came out here for. "Hey, you seem kind of frustrated back there. Is everything okay?"
"Yeah..." she said. After a while, she opened up. " It's just that I never feel appreciated. I never feel like what I do is good enough for others. Everyone just runs over me like I'm not even there. Like I don't matter."
"Of course you matter. I mean look at your brother, Miles, he loves you."
"He's not my brother. I'm adopted."
My heart dropped. I felt so awful for this poor girl.
"I'm so sorry." I told her.
" It just always reminds me that my parents never wanted me."
"Payton, it's not that they didn't want you. It may just have been that they couldn't support you and they wanted to give you a better life. They may not have had the choice. The point is you have people that love you now. Just remember, it is the friends in our lives that can always bring us back up when we've seemed to fall down."
" Thanks, Josie." Payton gives me a big hug. "You're a great friend and don't you ever forget it."
