The whole note takes up a whole bar. A half note splits that whole bar into 2 bars. A quarter note take those 2 bars and turns it into 4. Now for the eighth note there are in 8 bars but there is a line going a cross 4 of those bars. Now that is 2 eighth notes together.

The beats tell you how long the notes can go for so a for a whole not it'll just be one hit. The eighth notes can be pretty fast but not like a sixteenth note with is like 1/4 which goes fast. For the rest are like pauses so after a beat and there's a rest you don't play on it.
