In the night by Jon Batiste

"Wait here right quick, Mr. Charlie. I gotta run in and grab a few accoutrements for our friend here." I said, patting my sweet friend on his arm. He tipped his hat to me and looked straight ahead, beaming.

I'd discarded the stilettos on the ride home and held them loosely to my side as I ran through the iron gate and up the stairs to the front door. The cobblestone felt grainy and scratchy under my feet, but somehow through my cloudy inebriation I felt exhilarated.

Two sea foam green velvet Louis XV style armchairs sat in the foyer. I'd neatly folded his civvies there. I scooped them up and grabbed a bottle of electrolyte water from the fridge.
I ran back to the carriage, my feet covered in street grime, still clasping my jacket together at the chest. I opened the door as with the stealth of a parent peeking in on a sleeping baby. He was slouched back, his head falling loosely to one side, looking like a dream in spite of his current state of orgasm and alcoholic bliss.

.....I knew I should have taken it easy on the rum with him. I'm doomed to hell....

I laid his clothes on the seat and leaned into whisper in his ear.

"Now cracks a noble heart. Good night sweet prince: And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."
He stirred, and one side of his mouth crept upward. I could have sworn I saw him wink with his eyes closed.

"Make sure he gets to his room safely. Call me tomorrow. We will get your treatment sorted." I said. "Until then..."

I pressed one finger to my lips, folding several crisp Franklins into his large, weathered hands.
"Yes ma'am, thank you ma'am."

******two days later, Back in NYC*****

My phone buzzed incessantly as I tried to focus on my patients. Finally, a slight break between visits and I pulled the device from my lab coat.

Lin: Still hung over. I blame you. You're in a world of trouble when I get back from Cardiff. I mean really-you should be ashamed of yourself. Go to church.
Me:I'll repent as soon as my shift is over, you have my word.
Lin: I'll believe it when I see it. Xoxo
Me: What if there was something I could do to make it up to you?
Lin:Whatever do you mean, Diabla?
Me: You're not close to my clinic, are you?
Lin: oh sweet serendipity!!!🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 I'm just leaving Hunter.
Me: well, I just so happen to be serendipitously done for the day except for some charting. Why don't you slip in and I can help you fix your problem....
Lin: how about an hour-ish?
Me: Text me when you're close.

I'd wrapped up, my hands slightly trembling as I stood at the nurse's station, sending in prescriptions on my office laptop.
Another buzz.
Lin; Im close....
I turned the music up in my AirPods.
I did what I usually did in tense situations.
I threw on some hip hop and sang along.
