Detective Maria Baez's sister passed away in a car accident leaving her 12 year old son Max in the care of his aunt knowing that despite the fact that they weren't always on the best of terms especially in regards with Maria's job as a cop, she was the best one to take care of her son if she was no longer able to for any reason.

...

54th Precinct

Maria Baez: Sorry I'm late.

Danny Reagan: No problem, what's wrong?

Maria: So many things. (She sighs)

Danny: You know that you didn't have to come in today right, the Lieutenant would understand and we don't have any cases at the moment that I can't handle on my own.

Maria: No, I needed this. The last two weeks have been crazy and I just needed the stability that a daily routine provides.

Danny: I know that I'm the worst person to say this but you should give yourself a chance to get used to this new "normal". I can take care of things here. I Promise.

Maria: That's not the problem Reagan. My apartment was not designed for two people. It has one bedroom and that's no place to raise a growing child and my sister's apartment is way too far so it would be a nightmare getting in every day and who wants to live in their dead sister's apartment even...

Danny: Okay, take a deep breath. Let's go get some coffee.

Maria: Danny, no. We have paperwork to finish while we have no cases pending.

Danny: Turns out Cap doesn't really trust me to handle cases without my partner, something about... "She's the reason I'm not behind bars yet" so I've had two weeks to catch up on all our paperwork. Turns out I'm actually really good at it.

Maria: Wow, didn't know you knew how to do that seeing as you're constantly trying to pawn off your work.

Danny: I'm a highly decorated detective plus I didn't have much of a choice, now let's go. (He says grabbing his coat and making his way out)

Maria: Yeah, yeah. I'm coming, wait up.

...

Maria: Thanks.

Danny: So what's next?

Maria: I have to move, there's no two ways about that but it's going to take a while to get my sister's benefits so I'll just have to start looking now and see what comes.

Danny: So, just listen quickly.

Maria: Okay.

Danny: I have a spare bedroom plus Jack's room, a back yard, Sean and a built in babysitter.

Maria: Danny.

Danny: It can be temporary until you have everything sorted out. I'm sure Jack won't mind once I talk to him and Max can have another boy around because let's face it, he needs someone he'll want to talk to once all of this gets real or becomes too much and I'm guessing that might not be you. It's practical and you can save up while you live with us.

Maria: And you're nothing if not practical are you?

Danny: You know me so well. (He smiles)

Maria: Okay, talk to the boys first though. I'm not going to impose on their house without their approval, so to say.

Danny: It's my house.

Maria: But you're a Reagan and you guys do everything diplomatically when it comes to family and this isn't any different just because it's me.
