Please don't remind me. Please. I don't want to remember it. I want to forget it all..
Alex was passed out in bed when his dad walked in. He woke the child up with a firm shake of his shoulder. Not too violent but enough to scare you a bit.
"Alex wake up, it's your birthday. We're going out."
Today's the day. The day. Boy oh boy was this gonna be fun..
Alex got up and nodded as his dad finished his sentence. The large man walked out of the room as the boy yawned. He wanted to sleep some more but alas he couldn't. He got up and got cleaned up, dressed, usual morning routine.
He slipped his sneakers on and straightened himself out. He was feeling pretty grumpy because he didn't want to celebrate his birthday. He wanted everyone to forget, including himself. He walked down the stairs to the living room, his mom giving him a cold "Happy birthday." Nothing behind that voice of hers. Usually she tried to sound like she meant it even a little but this year she sounded unenthusiastic. Odd.
His dad didn't even say it. Part of Alex didn't like this but the other 99 percent did. He wanted to be ignored. He ate breakfast which was prepared by his dad, silent the whole time. "So, we're thinking of going to the pizza place for lunch today. Did you invite any friends to your birthday?" His dad said in his rich, deep tone like usual. Alex shook his head in response.
"Did you even have anyone to invite?" His dad asked with a bit more bitterness in his tone. He wanted this to hurt the poor child. As a type of punishment. Alex responded with the shake of his head again. "Why don't you ever make friends, huh? You're gonna be alone forever if you don't learn now." His dad said in a more scolding tone.
Alex didn't speak up however. He hung his head in silence and finished his breakfast. This day wasn't going to be pleasant. "You just gonna be silent all day and disrespect me because it's your birthday? Pff- yeah no. That's not gonna happen today kid." His father said with a flick to the kid's head. Alex didn't move. The boy sat there still as a rock.
Poor kid was spaced out for most of the day, his parents planning the day out on the spot. They were both already in bad moods because they were hungover. Fantastic..
Later on the three were on their way to the pizzeria in the town next door. It was a reasonably long drive there, having to go through quite a bit of outskirts. Alex watched as the scenery zoomed by but then suddenly the car started to slow down. His mom and dad seemed distressed, and his dad groaned.
"God damnit! The car's out of gas!" His dad said. His mom said she knew where a gas station was around the area, suggesting that he pushed the car there and fill it up. The gas station was supposedly only a mile away. The boy listened as they talked. Something in their tone seemed off. Everything seemed off. Like it was all a play. An act. He knew something was up, however pushing the paranoia away as he disregarded it as mere overthinking.
The boy's mom told him to get out of the car. As instructed he stepped out, she did as well. "The car's gonna be hot, and we don't need to put the extra weight on your father." She explained as they both slammed the doors shut, lightly rocking the car for a few seconds as usual.
Little did this boy know what what he did was the worst decision of his life.
The woman said to Alex, "Go sit in the shade, it's hot!" Her excuse for not going in the shade wasn't even existent. Alex nodded and walked into the trees on the side of the road. He decided he wanted to go a little further into them just to get some personal space.
Oh.. Silly boy. You're gonna get a lot more...

Then suddenly, he heard two slams. Slams of the car doors. What were these two doing? He stood up and walked over to where the car once sat, only to witness it speeding off into the distance. Not back home per se, but into town. The boy froze up with fear, he didn't want to chase after them but he did at the same time.
A feeling of panic and terror washed over him, flooding his mind. He didn't know what to do, how to act, what to say or think, he just stood there. Silently. As if he wouldn't ever talk again. Now he had no one. No family that wanted him, no friends to begin with, not even a person to help him get by.
His breathing started to kick up, his heart rate creepily climbing higher. Was today the day he died? Was this the beginning of his possible new life? Alex didn't know, but he did know he was scared and alone. At eleven years old. No longer ten, but god damnit today was not the day he wanted this to happen.
And now here he is stranded by the woods on a highway. He didn't know where his parents ran off to, but they ran off.
"I'm gonna die out here.."
Alex mumbled with his still high pitch and childish voice. The boy was young, but he was smart. He knew how to get by on his own. He just had to work a little harder now. He set off towards the town he was originally going to, trekking through the marsh and woodlands next to the highway. He didn't dare to leave it.

By the end of the night the child had to think about where he would sleep for that night, he was on his own now. He isn't even old enough to get a job, how will he get anywhere to stay? Gah, so many questions, they hummed and buzzed in his mind. Much like a swarm of bees. Some stang him and some didn't, but what hurt the most wasn't his mind. It was his body.
Why did this all even happen? What did he do to deserve this? How cynical are his parents? He knew he prayed to be dragged out of that hell, but not this way. Never this way. This is so much worse than if he stayed, because now he's in so much more danger than before. Tsk tsk, what a shame.
