Chapter 8

Ruby tried so hard to convince them to let her plan them a huge wedding, with a huge reception afterward. She wanted them to have it all. The flowers. The cake. The huge dresses that cost more than Emma's car. But in the end, all they wanted was a small quiet ceremony in the backyard, surrounded by Ruby and Granny. That's where they found themselves, a few weeks later, standing in their backyard wearing simple white dresses, the afternoon sun warming them, white flowers braided in their hair, the grass tickling their bare feet, with Ruby and Granny already crying behind them.

"Do you, Regina, take thee, Emma, to be your lawfully wedded Wife, to have and to hold from this day forward? Do you promise to love, honor and cherish her, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?" The Justice of the Peace asked Regina.

"I Do." Regina said, her voice catching in her throat.

"And do you, Emma, take thee, Regina, to be your lawfully wedded Wife, to have and to hold from this day forward? Do you promise to love, honor and cherish her, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?" The Justice of the Peace asked Emma.

"I Do." Emma whispered. Behind them, Ruby and Granny gasped, as they continued to cry.

"And now, it's time to exchange rings." The Justice of the Peace said, motioning for Ruby to deliver the rings. Rushing over, Ruby opened the small velvet bag, placing two rings in the Justice of the Peace's open hand, before rushing back to Granny, a new set of tears falling on their faces. "Regina, would you like to go first?" She asked, as she held her hand out for Regina, who took Emma's ring.

"Emma, I give you this ring, as a symbol of my love and faithfulness to you." Regina said, grabbing Emma's left hand. "Wear it as a sign of my love and dedication to you. Just as this circle is without end, my love for you is eternal. Just as it is unbreakable, my commitment to you will never fail." She said, as she slipped the ring onto Emma's finger, pushing it up to the second knuckle. "With this ring, I thee wed." She said, kissing the top of Emma's finger, pushing the ring the rest of the way onto her finger, Granny crying out behind them, causing Regina to laugh slightly.

"Emma?" Asked the Justice of the Peace, holding her hand out for Emma to take the remaining ring.

"Regina, I give you this ring, as a symbol of my love and faithfulness to you." Emma said, grabbing Regina's left hand. "Wear it as a sign of my love and dedication to you. Just as this circle is without end, my love for you is eternal. Just as it is unbreakable, my commitment to you will never fail." She said, as she slipped the ring onto Regina's finger, pushing it up to the second knuckle. "With this ring, I thee wed." She said, kissing the top of Regina's finger, pushing the ring the rest of the way onto her finger. This time Ruby cried out, startling them, and she reached to cling to Granny for support.

"With the power vested in me, by the state of Maine, I now pronounce you...joined in matrimony. You may now kiss your Bride!"

Time stopped once again, as Regina and Emma kissed for the first time as Wives. It felt like magic, as they stood there, lips together, arms wrapped around each other, as their family cried behind them.

"Congratulations Ladies." The Justice of the Peace said, when they eventually ended their kiss. The sound of a cork being popped from a champagne bottle caught everyone's attention, as Ruby poured five glasses of champagne, toasting the newlyweds. A little while later, as the sun began to set, they sat down to a wedding feast prepared by Granny, just the four of them, with an amazing wedding cake at the end. Ruby made sure the top tier was safely placed in the freezer for their first anniversary before insisting they smash the cake in each other's faces.
