Isabel was surprisingly happy for once, it was Melody's, her cousin, twelfth birthday. Meaning that her mother couldn't abuse her(passive aggressive comments were still free game, though). And that she got to spend time with her uncle, aunt, and of course, Melody.
They were at a treehouse her aunt and uncle had built on a secluded island when Melody was born. It became a vacation home for the family, Isabel also suspected her (supposedly missing) father had stayed there after he left(abandoned) them.
"Isabel!!" Melody groaned as she beat her at chess(once again). Rowan laughed from his spot on the couch, choosing to read instead and take turns beating the winner. The party wasn't for a few hours, but Melody asked(begged) for them to come early.
"Sorry Mel, but if i go easy you won't get better." Isabel laughed, setting up the chessboard again. "Wanna try again? Or maybe go up against belle, she's the worst of us 3."
"I don't like belle. She's mean to you." Melody pouted, she was close to Isabel and Rowan, but Belle had never liked her.
"It's fine. Anyway, if you don't want to get beat at chess again, what do you want to do?" Isabel asked, getting up from her seat.
"We could draw? Or we could put on a play!" Melody exclaimed, obviously excited at both activities. Isabel and Rowan looked at each other before Rowan spoke.
"How about you draw? We can put on a play when the party starts." Rowan suggested, probably not wanting to have to look after Melody when she's being hyper.
"Sure! I'll go get the paper and crayons!" Melody said before running off. Isabel put up the chess set while Melody was gone, knowing her uncle wouldn't like it if any of it got lost.
Melody returned with a few loose papers and a pack of crayons, setting them on the table as she got three pencils from a drawer.
"Ok! What's the theme?" She asked as she sat down. Isabel(and Rowan, after he found a bookmark). Did the same.
"How about we draw the treehouse? Not super hard but not easy either." Rowan suggested, grabbing a pencil and paper.
"Sounds good." "Sure." Came the replies as Melody and Isabel grabbed papers and pencils, Melody grabbed crayons as well. They all started drawing, Melody quietly mumbled to herself as she drew, while the other two stayed quiet, intently focused on what they were working on.
After a time Melody put down the crayon she was using, Isabel glanced up, she wasn't nearly finished and a quick glance to Rowan's page told Isabel he wasn't either.
Melody sat quietly for about five minutes before loudly groaning, obviously bored waiting for the two to finish. "When are y'all gonna be done?" She whined after another five minutes.
"I don't know, why don't you draw other things while we're still working on this?" Isabel said, sighing slightly. She still had the details to work on, and another glance at Rowan's page told her he was closer to being finished than Isabel, but still needed at least ten minutes to finish.
Isabel sighed as Melody asked when they were going to be done, again, she loved melody, but her patience was dwindling.
Isabel forwent a lot of the details she wanted to add so she would finish around the same time as rowan. They both put down their pencils when they were finished, Melody sighing in relief as they did.
"Let me see!!" Melody begged as she held up her rendition of the treehouse, it was good for a twelve year old, but pretty average over all. Isabel smiled slightly as she held up her picture. One of Isabel's coping mechanisms and hobbies was drawing, so Isabel's drawing was very good. Melody gasped when she saw it, clearly not expecting the quality.
Rowan laughed at Melody's reaction, Isabel often showed Rowan what she was working on, so he was expecting Isabel to go above and beyond. Lastly, Rowan held up his drawing, it was in between the qualities of the other two. Not as good as Isabels, but better than Melodys.
"How are you so good??" Melody asked, still clearly surprised at the quality.
"I have... a lot of free time." Was Isabel's response before they agreed on another prompt and started drawing. It went on like that until Melody's friends arrived, at that point Melody went off to play with them in her room.
Isabel and Rowan cleaned up the mess they made with the paper and art supplies before Rowan went back to reading on the couch and Isabel went to see if she could help her aunt and uncle with anything.
Belle was sitting in the kitchen talking with some of the older kids while the adults discussed their jobs, or the weather. Isabel easily slid onto the counter, listening to the different conversations happening, Belle and the older kids were complaining about anything and everything, while the adults had switched to discussing what they got for Melody. It ranged from a new dress to a rather expensive tiara(courtesy of Zeke, her uncle's best friend, right hand man, and Melody's honorary uncle).
There was a knock at the door, a few guests hadn't arrived so everyone just assumed it was one of them.
They could hear commotion as the door opened, Isabel's aunt went to check on Enoch, her uncle, but when she reached the door they heard a strangled scream. At that, everyone went into a panic, parents grabbing their children and trying to find a way out of the house, while Rowan grabbed Isabel and Belle, dragging them to a slightly hidden closet.
"What about mom??" Belle whispered-yelled at Rowan, who's breathing was slightly ragged.
"Shut up! I saw the people who attacked Enoch and Harper talking in a different language. But I could pick out 'get the kid' 'leave no witnesses' and 'worth a lot'. I think they're going after Mel." Rowan replied after gaining his breath.
"So you left her??" Isabel asked, her voice matching Rowan's in a whisper.
"What else was I supposed to do?? I couldn't get you two and her. And while I love melody, I'd rather make sure y'all live." Rowan sent a sympathetic look towards Isabel, knowing she'd rather have melody live than herself.
"What do we do if mom dies??" Belle asked, annoyed at the other two.
"Dad left us each a trust fund, and the house is technically in my name because I'm the oldest fae by blood, we'll be fine."
They were in the closet until a rider found them while searching the house, they were questioned on who they were, why they were hidden in a closet and where their parents were. Rowan answered for all of them then asked if they found anything to the identities of the intruders. The riders hadn't, but they found the bodies of the few kids and parents who didn't get out, along with Melody and her parents.
Lilith acted like a caring mother when rowan, isabel, and belle were dropped off at the Fae manor, she was briefly questioned on why she left her children at the house, to which she replied that she had thought one of her friends grabbed them and kept them for the night as a favor to her.
When the riders left on the other hand, Lilith doted on Belle's well-being and completely ignored Isabel and rowan.
What should've been a relatively happy day turned to one of despair for Isabel and Rowan, but Isabel should've expected it. There have been very few happy moments in her life since her father left.
