Emma! Go take the dog out! But dad it's 10 and it's too dark. Emma, don't be dramatic. It's fine to go get the flashlight from the laundry room. Sighing, I got up from my bed and grabbed my dog Louie. Come on, let's go putting him on a leash and getting the flashlight. I took a deep breath and stepped out into the Minnesota cold. We live in the rural country so there isn't anyone close. I hated going outside at night. The trees are so large they look like giant monsters. Okay Louie, let's go to your favorite spot. Walking through the giant trees I heard to my left a -crack- of a branch. I stopped in my tracks and slowly turned my head. I took a sigh of relief, nothing there. Honey what are you doing out here in the cold? I was stunned in fear t-thats my mom's voice... she isn't here anymore. How could I be hearing her voice? I took off running and I heard louie whining behind me come on! Run louie! I heard trees rustling behind me and a deep monstrous growling and then my mom's voice again. Honey where are you going it's me I came to see you again! I kept on running thinking it's not mom it's not her shes gone shes gone! -boom- and -crack- i screamed and grabbed my chin i felt blood running down my neck i felt around and i felt a skull i used it to get up i-i was surrounded by bones. I couldn't walk. I was too dizzy but I smelled a foul odor, the smell of death and decay I started coughing. Where is Louie? I heard a cracking noise and a whimper no no! Where is he! Oh honey it's okay come here I love you and I missed you come here. No, I screamed you are not my mother! She's gone! I hurriedly looked around me for escape to my right. I saw a giant spirit that was over 15 feet tall. I fell to my knees in horror, my tears mixing with my blood. And that disgusting smell was still there. I picked myself up and ran the other direction. I heard the growling and trees being rustled. I knew it was following me. How do I lose it! I was lost. I didn't know where my house was anymore. I was disoriented then I smelled smoke. Smoke! It was my house. My dad had lit a fire, thank god! I ran toward the smell and collapsed on the doorstep. I woke up to bright lights and a sharp pain in my face. Honey, you're awake! Dad is that you yes yes it is i'm so glad you're okay! As he grabbed my hand what happened? Nothing, nothing just get better. Laying my head down dad, where is louie? He sighed. I don't know. One week later I was at home resting. Dad, can I tell you what happened. Yes, of course you can tell me anything. okay it was a creature something unnatural i-i think it killed louie... he looked at me with sad eyes you just got lost and hurt yourself louie got lost too and sadly he couldn't find his way back like you i'm so sorry honey he hugged me i knew he wasn't going to listen to my story any further. -13 years later- im finally going to see dad again, walking up to the door i hesitated a bit then knocked, Emma i missed you come in! I made tea your favorite camille. Oh wow dad thank you. You didn't have to go through all that trouble nonsense! I looked at his face the wrinkles were deep he really wasn't the same ever since the incident when i was ten he didn't act the same he boarded up the house didn't let me go outside after 7 the house was dark and he would sit near the door with a cup of coffee and a gun it freaked me out i couldn't wait to leave. When I was 17 I admitted him to the psych ward. He stayed there for 3 years and came home and he looked even more tired than before. Emma? Oh sorry in thought um can i ask you about what happened? No, I don't want to talk about it, he said in an irritated voice. Dad please! Tell me I know what I saw! I didn't just get lost, it's more than that! Fine he said if you wanted to be tainted with this i will tell you. Sitting back in my seat I thought for a second yes I do want to know. Well what you saw was a wendigo. It is a malevolent cannibalistic supernatural being. It can copy the voices of people like your mother. Take these and get out of my house now.getting in my car i opened up the first file "The Algonquian legend" "a giant with a heart of ice; sometimes, it is thought to be entirely made of ice. Its body is skeletal and deformed, with missing lips and toes." oh my god that's disgusting but i wanted to go on and learn more even though i was terrified. I turned the page "The Ojibwa" "It was a large creature, as tall as a tree, with a lipless mouth and jagged teeth. Its breath was a strange hiss, its footprints full of blood, and it ate any man, woman, or child who ventured into its territory. And those were the lucky ones. Sometimes, the Wendigo chose to possess a person instead, and then the luckless individual became a Wendigo himself, hunting down those he had once loved and feasting upon their flesh." I could feel my heart speeding up. I couldn't catch my breath t-this is wrong i put my head on the wheel and caught my breath. I got out of there and got a hotel. I looked up "wendigo legends" and I clicked the first article. A Wendigo is created whenever a human resorts to cannibalism to survive. In the past, this occurred more often when Indians and settlers found themselves stranded in the bitter snows and ice of the north woods. Sometimes stranded for days, any survivors might have felt compelled to cannibalize the dead to survive. Other versions of the legend cite that humans who displayed extreme greed, gluttony, and excess might also be possessed by a Wendigo. Thus the myth served as a method of encouraging cooperation and moderation. I called my father dad. What happened to louie? I heard a loud sigh. Do you really want to know? Yes dad, I told you that at your house! Okay, okay he said we found him 3 days after what happened his head was gone and his bones were scattered his skin and fur made a circle. I started crying poor louie. I left him there. It's not your fault Emma but you can never come back. It's too risky the wendigo wants you. It won't leave you alone knowing that you know the real story. I'm sorry Emma, I can't leave here. The day after you were in the hospital a priest came and blessed the land and a shawman came he said the wendigo wants you so you have to stay here so it won't hurt you or anyone else. I will die in this house soon. I love you Emma, don't ever come back. A wendigo killed your mother. I don't know what's wrong with me. He said through sobbing dad I love you, I love you so much. Be safe. I'll try, he said then hung up. I should just go to sleep. I woke up at 3:33. I need to know more. I looked up a first person story on a wendigo. I found the word "wendigo psychosis." Some psychiatrists consider it a syndrome that creates an intense craving for human flesh and a fear of becoming a cannibal. Wendigo psychosis usually develops in the winter in individuals who are isolated by heavy snow for long periods. The initial symptoms are poor appetite, nausea, and vomiting. Subsequently, the individual develops a delusion of being transformed into a Wendigo monster. People who have Wendigo psychosis increasingly see others around them as being edible. At the same time, they have an exaggerated fear of becoming cannibals. I thought that only happened if you were a serial killer like jeffery dahmer.i found Another documented case occurred in 1878 when a Plains Cree trapper from Alberta named Swift Runner suffered one of the worst cases known. Swift Runner was a trader with the Hudson's Bay Company who was married and the father of six children. In 1875, he served as a guide for the North West Mounted Police. During the winter of 1878-79, Swift Runner and his family were starving, along with numerous other Cree families. His eldest son was the first to die of starvation, and at some point, Swift Runner succumbed to Wendigo psychosis. Though emergency food supplies were available at Hudson's Bay Company post some 25 miles away, he did not attempt to travel there. Instead, he killed the remaining members of his family and consumed them. He eventually confessed and was executed by authorities at Fort Saskatchewan. Wow, that's insane he killed them and ate them? Poor kids. A Wendigo allegedly made several appearances near Rosesu in Northern Minnesota from the late 1800s through the 1920s. Each time it was reported, an unexpected death followed, and finally, it was seen no more. They have been here forever. They kill like crazy; it seems like they're never full. I kept going deeper. Another well-known case involving Wendigo psychosis was that of Jack Fiddler, an Oji-Cree chief and medicine man known for his powers at defeating wendigos. Fiddler claimed to have defeated 14 wendigos during his lifetime. Some of these creatures were said to have been sent by enemy shamans, and others were members of his band who had been taken with the insatiable, incurable desire to eat human flesh. In the latter case, family members usually asked Fiddler to kill a very sick loved one before they turned wendigo. Fiddler's brother, Peter Flett, was killed after turning wendigo when the food ran out on a trading expedition. Hudson's Bay Company traders, the Cree, and missionaries knew the Wendigo legend, though they often explained it as mental illness or superstition. Regardless, several incidents of people turning wendigo and eating human flesh are documented in the company's records.
In 1907, Fiddler and his brother Joseph were arrested by the Canadian authorities for murder. Jack committed suicide, but Joseph was tried and sentenced to life in prison. He ultimately was granted a pardon but died three days later in jail before receiving the news of this pardon. There are so many wendigo's if he says he deafted 14 of them. And I thought to myself this is the last case. However, Wendigo creature sightings are still reported, especially in northern Ontario, near the Cave of the Wendigo, and around Kenora, where traders have allegedly spotted it, trackers, and trappers for decades. Many still believe that the Wendigo roams the woods and the prairies of northern Minnesota and Canada. Many have given Kenora, Ontario, Canada, the title of Wendigo Capital of the World. Sightings of the creature in this area have continued well into the new millennium. They took my mother. They have taken so many people. I layed down and cried till I fell asleep. -2 years later- My father died in the same place with his cup of coffee and his gun.
