Part 2

Another long and mundane morning that was quickly leading into a boring afternoon. She sighed and once more adjusted her clothing before turning to glance down the long hallway. The sounds of running reached her ears and then a set of figures as they turned the corner.

"Don't run inside!" She warned the two boys who rushed past her.

"We can't!" One called out to her. "If we want to a knight we need to pratice running!"

"We need to be the fastest of them all!" The other gave a cheery grin and pulled in front of the other boy.

Kate smiled at the display and shook her head. Even if it was against the mistress' rules... she couldn't enforce them if it was two of the kids trying to live out their dream. Even if that dream was only possible for those in the royal or noble families. Or the lucky odd person who naturally was good with a sword or a weapon.

Kate walked down the hallway, checking in on all the children she cared for. It was a hard job, being one of the few caretakers of the children who lived here. They had all been abandoned for one reason or another and had nowhere else to go to seek shelter.

Though, she didn't know how much of a place of sanctuary this place was now though, seeing as food rations had been cut short. The duke who had cared for this place and given much of his wealth to had died as of late and his son refused to keep up with his father's kind deeds. Making it so the children were getting less and less to eat day by day.

Or at least that had been what was happening until Kate had found a way to bring more food into the children's home to keep all the children fed and save what little money they had for repairs or medicine.

The headmistress had reached out to several other dukes and nobles, asking for generosity, but none had replied. Kate prayed that one would find the goodness in their heart at giving them something to help them... and so she could cease how she was able to obtain such items of food.

When she had originally been prompted by a few of the other caretakers, she had been vague enough to make them all tease her about being a criminal. They all could not be closer to the truth.

It had started out with robbing eateries as they threw out leftover food, but the food was often stale and sometimes covered in mold or worse. So, Kate had started to rob places of standing that would not miss a few gold coins or minor objects of worth.

She wanted to stop such actions more than anything but knew that until the children had a guaranteed way of food always arriving on their plates three times a day, she would have to keep it up.

Even if she was starting to gain unwanted attention now.

She had honestly thought that dressing up as a spirit would spook the superstitious people of the village. She had been right for the majority of them... just not the guy from last night. She didn't know if she was incredibly lucky or incredibly unlucky having escaped from the prince of this kingdom.

Rumors about him and his strength were as frequent as the sun rising every morning. Either way, she would have to be more cautious in her escapades if she wanted to stay out of trouble and away from a guillotine.

Perhaps it was time to take a break? She had enough money stored away to last at least a week to pay for food. Yes... that might be the best-

A pounding came onto the door and Kate nearly jumped. She sped walked towards the large wooden doors and began to unlock them, curious who was here and making such a ruckus. She got her answer quickly, as the door was thrown open the moment it started to move and she was now staring at the crown prince once more.

He looked terrible peeved off and he stormed in past her. Kate gulped and slowly followed after him. What was he doing here? She had been so careful!

"Oi, woman!" He spun to face her. "Where is the fucking guy in charge of this place! I'm here to take his shitty ass in."

Kate breathed in softly. "Pardon?"

"Whoever is fucking in charge here has been robbing people blind. Where is your fucking master?"

"I-I... um." She fumbled her words. "We no longer have one. The duke who provided for us died a few months back."

"So who runs this shit show?"

"The old mistress."

"Any kind of young guy here?"

Kate shook her head. "I am afraid not... its only women here who run this place. We care for the orphaned children of the-"

"I fucking know what this place is- so shut it." He snarled at her and met her eyes.

The prince looked her up and down and then his eyes narrowed. Kate inhaled slowly once more, doing her best to appear calm, collected, rational, and above all: innocent. But if there was anything the rumor mill didn't say about the prince... it was how smart he was.

The moment he had locked eyes with her, he knew he saw those blue hues before. And as he glanced down at her attire, he spotted muddied boots. Ones he was sure would have that insignia of the apparently passed away duke.

"Oi." He looked at her and snatched her wrist. "I got a few fucking questions for you."

Kate blinked and smiled at him. "Me? Why?"

"You damn well know why..." He spoke back and then turned to the door, dragging her with him. "Now come on you fucking thie-"

"That's the prince!"

"The prince is here!"

"Did he come to make us his new knights!"

Kate paused when she saw all the children poking their heads in from various places. They must have heard the prince's loud voice and come to see what was happening. Well... if anything- she'd at least get to see all their smiling faces one more time before she was taken in.

She only hoped the prince would be kind enough to not place any ill words onto the children due to her actions. They had already suffered enough after all.
