My head lurches forward snapping me awake. Leaning my head back against the head-rest I momentarily wonder where the hell I am. Feeling movement around me I open my eyes, look out the window remembering I'm on a train. Noting the decrease in speed, we must soon be pulling into Venice station.

Pinching the bridge of my nose with my index finger and thumb I think back to my nightmare life and how it brought me to this moment in time. The life I led and how in it came back almost leaving me for dead.

It's been a year since I've gone, keeping Seattle in my rear-view mirror. The life I once hid in the shadows, the secrets kept from my family, not only came to light but damn near destroyed what little I held dear.

Now life is taking on a new course as I sit on a train lost in Italy watching the world go by. I've gotten used to never staying in one place too long and intend on keeping it that way.

No longer bothering with first class, coach gets me to the same destination just fine. Getting up from my seat I make my way to the tiny lavatory and stare at my reflection in the mirror looking one step above a homeless person. My copper hair, unruly and unmanageable sitting at my shoulders a beard that's overgrown and gray eyes that are dull. I study the scar running down the side of my brow to my lower cheek. Shaking my head I guess I should be lucky I didn't lose an eye.

Four months spent in the traction with an additional six month of physical therapy they slowly repaired my body. I can walk but need the aid of a cane and while plastic surgery helped mend my face, nothing has been able to mend my soul. Making my way to the lounge I order red wine that's served to me in a plastic cup, I open the medicine bottle popping another painkiller. I chuckle at the fact that my smug ass in the past would never sit in coach, much less drink cheap red wine out of plastic. Reaching down I rub my leg, not that it makes much difference. Deciding to pace the train car until the pain pill kicks in. Out of the corner of my eye I see the blinking overhead display stating arrival into Venice fifteen minutes.

Taking my sit a few minutes before coming to a stop, I feel the pill kicking in. Leaning my head back I once again close my eyes.
