IRAQ - May 30th, 2003
Interesting. That was your first comment as you let your eyes run over the book you had on hand. You bought it in a small shop in an unknown city, just before getting on the helicopter and immediately thought of reading the first pages to kill time, until you ended up devouring it...seriously, it was always the same story, when something like this piqued your interest and you couldn't help but be attracted to it!
Or maybe, you were just overexcited about that unexpected journey, which made you involuntarily smile while reading. Of course, you still couldn't believe that you, an ordinary physiotherapist, had agreed to leave the USA for a military mission in the Middle East.
《You seem to be enjoying the reading over there, what's talking about?》 Suddenly, the voice of the woman sitting in front made you look up in her direction. At that point, you closed the book to show the cover.
《It's about Ancient Mesopotamian Mythology. Did you know Sumerians were among the first astronomers in the world?》 You started explaining, affected by the content while the other just stared at you without stopping chewing her gum.
《Never heard. By the way, do you have European origins or something? I think I've never heard this Kolchek before...》
When she said that, you straightened your back on your seat without holding a smile and with the book still in your hands. For you, it was always funny to see how many people were capable of asking you the same, damn thing every time they knew you...
《Hell no and you best believe me, my last name's more American than what you think, Dr. Stokes.》
Right there, your smile squeezed tighter on your left cheek to show a cheeky dimple on it, as you were crossing your bare, white legs at the same time; of course, hearing that kind of accent come out of your mouth, the physicist couldn't help but make an amused grimace in response, realizing that you came from the south.
Then, you turned your head to the only man sitting next to you, who had been silent all that time but with a slight smile on his lips.
《And you? Are you enjoying the flight Mr. King?》 You mocked him innocently as you stared at his aviator sunglasses. For you, it was the first time you saw Colonel King in vogue since you met him.
《Not particularly. Instead, I'm glad to see that you're doing Y/n.》 After your first meeting and the nice progress with his physical rehab, the blond one often referred to you by your first name, nothing to complain about that, but you had always tried to keep the right distance with Eric, because you knew perfectly well he was a married man...even after that happened to you.
Definitely, if there was one thing you hated in a relationship it was betrayal.
《How's it going there? You must tell me if anythin' goes wrong, okay? I'm here for this.》 Your attention quickly shifted to his right leg, where you knew there was a wooden prosthesis; although it had been some time since you did a medical checkup, you were relieved to see him so busy at his work, in particular with this Caelus, that he had created on his own and of which he was very proud.
But Eric just looked at you with a relaxed smile, almost pleased to hear that you were worried about him; anyway, you said nothing more and just put your book inside the backpack before preparing yourself for the helo landing. Eric was the first to go down, followed by you and his assistant; there, you noticed she was carrying a briefcase but didn't have time to ask about it, because your eyes soon turned to that majestic palace.
