It was a few days after I moved in with my aunt and uncle, and I can honestly say that I have been really enjoying it. As per usual, my aunt does all the cooking while my uncle does all of the cleaning. Since I was now another resident sharing their space, I decided that I would help to lessen their burdens a little by taking care of myself, which was how I got into the situation I am now.
I had wanted to scramble some eggs and was checking if the temperature was hot enough to put the eggs in, when I accidentally touched the hot oil with my finger.
I cursed, pulling my finger back and turning the stove off before rushing to the sink. Honestly, it isn't that I'm not good at cooking, it had more to do with me being really clumsy. My aunt and uncle was out on their job so I was alone in the apartment, thankfully, otherwise they would not let me hear the end of it. I always knew that Uncle Will was the witty type, but I did not realize how witty until I was living with him.
After the burning sensation had lessened, I turned the tap off and returned to making my scramble eggs. Thankfully, I was able to do that without any further mishaps. I placed it onto a plate and poured myself a cup of water before setting it all down on the island to eat. Feeling bored, I took out one of the textbooks about magic spells and decided to read it. My eyes widened as I came across a healing spell. I scanned through the steps on how to cast it and prepped myself for it.
I was excited. This was the first spell I would ever cast as I had avoided casting any due to it all being a little too complicated for me at the moment. This spell seemed easy enough. There were two fundamental steps to casting a spell, visualization and solidification. The first step was simple enough to do, imagine what you'd expect or want the spell to do, but the second step was where it was difficult for me.
Solidification simply means making the image in your head come to life. It is kind of similar to seeing hallucinations, where things that you're seeing isn't really there. In fact, the book made it clear that people with hallucinations were the Odd Ones, which refers to someone that was not inherently magic but is able to perform it. What they were lacking was the material which would give the hallucinations life - Magic.
After reminding myself of all of the things I would need to do, I took a deep breath and imagined the burn on my finger disappearing. I pushed aside the instinct to close my eyes and focused the image solidifying on my finger. Then, I focused on doing the next thing that I was struggling with, focusing magic to come out of my 'Core' and making it flow to my finger. There isn't an exact way I can describe it, but it was sort of like trying to let out a really deep breath.
I felt the electrifying jolts begin to appear when I call on my magic. It was a shock at first, but soon it became comforting, soothing almost.
My eyebrows were scrunched in focus and I felt a drop of sweat drip down from my temple as I tried to direct my magic onto my finger. When it got there I visualized the burn on my finger beginning to disappear. Slowly, but surely, it was doing just that.
I couldn't help it and let the smile on my face take form. A few more seconds and the burn was completely gone, but the magical shocks were still here.
It was addicting, this feeling. And I didn't want it to go away.
But not long after, it dissipated away, leaving me feel a little bit empty. But I kept smiling, my first time using magic was a success. I turned back to my meal and caught sight of myself on the metal spoon, which made my smile disappeared instantly. My eyes were glowing, a violent shade of mauve. Panicking, I ran to the bathroom and checked on myself in the mirror, and sure enough my eyes were glowing.
I was stunned, my grey eyes were now glowing a bright purple, it was so bright that it was almost like small flashlights were being shone from behind my eyes. I touched the area around my eyes with care, inspecting. I was not afraid to admit that they were beautiful. Not knowing how to stop the glowing, I went back to eating my breakfast and hoped that it would turn back to normal soon.
