"Have you got everything, my darling?"

Eden's head whipped up in surprise, looking over her shoulder to see her mother entering the empty cottage. She managed a half-smile, looking back at the empty stone room. These walls held hard memories, and she couldn't be more relieved to be leaving them behind.

"I'm just going to do a final sweep, mother." She replied to the ageing woman with a pained smile. She nodded and turned slowly, drawing her eyes from Eden to the empty room.

"I'll be outside."

"Just take the carriage, mother. I'll take Tyr, and I'll meet you at the palace."

"Okay. You know where you're going. See you soon, my love." With a final wave, Eden's mother was gone.

Eden took a shaky breath and walked through the small wooden doorway, her hands trailing across it as she passed through. Every crevice, bump, and splinter, brought back another memory. She entered her old bedroom, walking slowly around the perimeter. She saw her younger self, sitting in the corner, belittled and alone, trying to survive in a mind which felt like it did not belong to her. She shook the memory out of her head, turning to see another version of her younger self, pushing herself to the limits of her physicality. It was not enough.

She exited her room, closing the door behind her in an attempt to trap the memories behind it. She skimmed the rest of the cottage, well aware her mother would not have forgotten anything, before finally leaving her cursed childhood home for good. Tyr, her tall black stallion stood patiently in the paddock, grazing on the fresh spring grass which grew wild at the border of the forest. His ears pricked forward as he noticed Eden leave the cottage, which brought a smile across her face. A genuine one. She walked over to Tyr, the stallion saying hello by gently nudging her chest with his nose.

"Let's get out of here, Tyr." She whispered, mounting the stallion with ease. She turned one last time, drinking in the cottage before nudging Tyr into a slow canter towards the main Asgardian roads.

The sun wasn't as heavy as it usually was today, which Eden preferred. She had her pristine white hair built up into a high ponytail, which was pleated so it didn't get tangled. The streets of Asgard were bustling as they took advantage of the cool day, much to Eden's dismay as she and Tyr winded their way around vendors in an attempt to reach the castle. Finally, the golden palace came into clear view, and Eden felt a wave of excitement rush through her belly.

Eden's mother was well-acquainted with Queen Frigga, who extended an invitation for the pair to move into the palace. With Eden's mother ageing, and Eden moving into the first phases of becoming an Asgardian soldier, moving to the palace was believed to be the smartest move. Eden knew the golden walls extremely well, with her mother making frequent trips to the palace as a child, however, it all stopped when her abusive father returned home from Vanaheim, and prohibited them from returning to the palace.

Eden's father trained her to be a fierce warrior, and she was not to focus on what other young Asgardian women did at her age. For this, and a myriad of other things, she hated him. She was abused, physically and mentally, before his demise a few years ago. She snapped back from her daydream as her thoughts reached her father's death. She pushed it back down, refusing to think about it and focus on the future. She was returning home.

Eden had intended to arrive quietly at the palace and familiarise herself with her new room, however, Frigga had other plans. As Eden and Tyr entered the grand courtyard, she heard her name being called by a deep, unfamiliar voice. She looked around to see a tall, well-built, blond-haired man waving at her with a huge smile spread across his face. It took her a second to realise who it was.

The last time Eden saw Thor, they were young teenagers. Now both adults, it was as if they had never spent a day apart. Thor always looked after Eden, and she loved him like a brother, and he loved her like a sister. She pushed Tyr into a gallop, whirring across the courtyard and quickly dismounting to throw herself into Thor's arms.

"Look at you... you've put some weight on." She raised an eyebrow in a joking manner. Thor opened his mouth, pretending to be offended at the suggestion before bursting out laughing.

"Maybe a few pounds... of pure muscle." He flexed, which made Eden burst out laughing. Thor grinned. "Oh, how I missed you, Eden. When mother told me you were coming here I could've burst with excitement. Where have you been over the years?"

Eden tried not to flinch at the question, but Thor knew he had crossed a boundary and quickly changed the topic.

"Well, I believe we are due a celebration of some sort. Tonight." Thor announced.

"No - Thor, please. I am far too tire-" Eden began to plead.

"Nonsense, my oldest friend has returned and we shall see to it we celebrate!" He grinned. Eden rolled her eyes and let out an exasperated sigh.

"If I must."

"My, you really have not changed, have you?" Thor noted with a smile. Eden returned it weakly. "Come on, I'll show you to your room."

---

Eden looked around her new golden room, mouth agape. The palace walls rose to an impressive height, sparkling against the Asgardian sunshine pouring in through the thin cream linen curtains.

"Thor..." she turned to her friend with a worried look on her face. "I cannot accept this. I am here to train as a warrior."

"You are more than an aspiring warrior. You are a family friend. Your mother has been loved as a family member here, we were not going to place you in the warrior's quarters. This is your new home." Thor grinned warmly.

Eden felt a wash of happiness and acceptance rush through her, rushing to hug Thor tight.

"Thank you. You have no idea how much this means to me."

Thor smiled, hugging Eden back. There was a voice at the back of his head, however, which was in agreement with Eden. He really did not know how much being away from that cottage meant to her.

"Brother."

Loki scowled at the sound of his irritating brothers' voice, pulling him out of his texts. He stayed quiet, in a vain attempt to hide and hope Thor would give up. He listened to his heavy footsteps track through the one of many libraries within the palace.

"Brother, I know you are here."

"Oh, what is it now, Thor? Why have you disturbed me?" he snapped, peeking his head out of the small nook he had fit his slender body inside.

"She has returned."

Loki's stomach dropped at the pronoun, knowing exactly who 'she' was. He turned away, closing his eyes and grounding himself once more.

Emotions are a weakness. Keep your brain strong.

His own curt words echoed around his head as he saw the image of a young girl, confused and upset, being dragged away by her father from the palace grounds. That was over a decade ago, and after a while, Loki stopped convincing himself she would return someday.

He was wrong, and Loki is hardly ever wrong.
