文芸物語 - A Literary Story
Skimming his fingers over spines of various books lining dusty and dry shelves, Hiromi felt a sigh bubbling up in his throat. He pushed a couple fingers between two novels to form a big enough space to gently slide in an appropriate book. He was all around feeling uncomfortable today, his uniform shirt felt too loose and itchy against his skin, his shoes felt awkwardly heavy and his body just felt fatigued. He felt lazy, just wanting the library to close already so he could go home and have a hot bath...
It was currently 7:47pm and the library officially closed its doors at 8pm, but it was unlikely that Hiromi would be able to go home until at least 8:30 or 9pm after cleaning and routine checking had been taken care of. He grumbled to himself as he looked over his returns trolley, only a few books were left on it, but they were at places all around the library so there wasn't much of a chance of him just being able to do his returns quickly and then be able to just hang out in the staff tea room until 7. He took a deep breath and exhaled in a long sigh. It's fine... It's not like there's anyone left here anyways, all the patrons have gone home since we close in 10 minutes, just dawdle and get these returns done. He thought, brushing back dark brown hair away from his eyes only for it to fall back over it immediately. he rolled brown eyes and reached for his trolley again, pushing it through a few isles to try and find the right section of the Japanese literature to return a book.
Facing the A-E section, Hiromi scanned the shelves idly, skimming book titles and call codes. Furrowing his brow when he reached the end of the shelf, Hiromi briefly considered just dumping the book at the end of the shelf and moving on, but ultimately decided against it, shaking his head and turning his attention back to the shelf when a blob of dark red caught his eyes.
"Maybe we put up a décor piece for Setsubun..?" He mumbled, frowning and peaking around the bookshelf to get a better look.
What he saw definitely wasn't a red Oni mask to celebrate Setsubun at all, instead he was looking at someone slumped over one of the many reading/study tables in the literature section, flame red hair definitely not that of a Japanese person hanging in short tendrils over their arm and some of the table. Hiromi froze and stared at the person, feet nailed to the floor. They were definitely sleeping, quite peacefully at that, situated right behind the A-E literature shelf and underneath one of the few air conditioner vents in the downstairs building. Hiromi swallowed hard. There was only a few moments until the pre-recorded announcement went over the loudspeaker saying that the library was closed and the door would be locked. He took another deep breath, feeling his knees shake. By far his least favourite thing about working this job was telling any stragglers that they had to leave, not only did he have the general crippling fear of talking to people, but he was always gut-wrenchingly terrified that someone he was talking to would just start shouting at him in response. He took a shaky exhale and clenched his fists, taking baby steps towards the table that the person was sleeping at. The good thing about this situation... Hiromi thought to himself is that this person is asleep, so I can approach as awkwardly and quietly as I need to to remain calm because they're not judging me...
Another step towards the table.
They're not judging me...
