Behind the Curtains

I stood there, shaking. I was starting to sweat and I was feeling faint. Why did I agree to this? No. I did because I needed to overpower my nerves. This is what I want to do, I can't live my life in the shadows. It's my time to shine.

The velvet red in front of me stopped being a blur. I saw it gently swaying, as if beckoning me forward. The hurried noise behind me faded to a soft hum. I started to see everything clearer. I closed my eyes and pictured the roaring crowd, the bright light shining on me.

My teacher shoved me forward, "Go on. I've trained you for this and now you have your opportunity. Go on". I turned around and saw her disappointed face, I saw my friends' hopeful faces, but lastly my eye landed on first Katie's but then Lucy's smug, threatening smiles. I took one step forward. I'd had enough of the two of them. Another step. It seems as if they've dedicated their whole life to being the one on top, being the outstanding one, the one that makes people gape and whisper in awe at their talent. One more step, my nose was touching the soft velvet. But this time I was the one to climb to the top and break through the undergrowth. One. Last. Step. And I'm not intending to fall.
