"Oh no!" Mathilde cried. Victor came up from behind her and asked "What Happened?" Mathilde looked at him  and said "The Necklace! It's gone! I've lost it!" Victor looked at her in shock. "You lost it?! How could you lose it?!" Mathilde stood there shocked at Victor's outburst, she suddenly teared up. "I'm sorry!, I- I- I didn't mean to lose it!" She wailed. Victor Looked at his wife "Look at me, were going to fix this okay? I'm going to go back outside to look for it, you look in here." He kissed her cheek and went off to look for the necklace.

After a few hours Victor came back. Mathilde stood up "Did you find it?" Victor looked at her sadly and shook his head. "I'm sorry, dear, but I looked everywhere there was just no sign of it." Mathilde looked like she was about to cry again. "What am I going to tell Jeanne?" Victor thought about it and looked at her. "Tell her you've given the necklace to be fixed, as you've broken the clasp. This will give us time to look for the necklace." Mathilde nodded and went to write the letter.

While Mathilde did that, Victor went and made a complaint to the Police and cab drivers. But no word came to them.

Victor ran a hand down his face. "We have no choice but to replace the necklace."

The next day, they went around everywhere looking at all the jewelers. After hours of looking they finally found one! Mathilde ran up to the jeweler and asked. "Sir! How much is that?" The jeweler looked at her and said "This, Ma'am? It will cost you forty thousand francs." Victor and Mathilde looked at each other in worry. They bargained with the jeweler and got the price down to thirty five thousand francs. They also managed to convince him to put the necklace on a reservation for them till they got the money for it.

The Loisels were in a tight spot. They do not have the money to buy back the necklace that Mathilde lost. Even with the discount the jeweler had given them. Mathilde felt like she didn't have a choice. She decided to try and steal the money. Victor was livid. Mathilde argued that it was the only way they could pay for the expensive necklace. They argued for a long while, until Victor finally convinced her that they would find another way. After their long argument they fell asleep.

Moments later Mathilde quietly wakes up to continue with her plan. She prepares to go outside and hope for the "best". Before she gets out of the room she knocks over a bottle, startled by the noise Mathilde checks on Victor, to her relief Victor is still asleep. She quickly runs outside.

After walking around, she finds a bank that had no one guarding it. (Don't you just love when banks have low security. :D) She briefly wondered as to why a bank would have no one guarding it specially in the middle of the night. She shrugs it off as luck, she quietly enters the bank, and after a bit of searching she finds the vault where the money is kept. She uses a lock pick to try and open the vault, after a few tries she succeeds. After she open the vault, she hastily steals everything inside the small vault and snatches around five million francs.

Mathilde ran out as fast as she could. After she had gone out of the bank she composed herself as to not look suspicious. She walks past a citizen, who looked at her questioningly. They noticed her when she ran out of the bank and as soon as Mathilde passed by they saw her bag filled with money.

After Mathilde walked off, the citizen approached one of the guards that were just arriving. They told the guards that maybe they have been robbed, and tells them what Mathilde looked like.

Mathilde arrives home, Victor is still asleep. She straitened herself and laid down next to Victor, acting as if she had just woke up. A few minutes pass and Victor stirs and looks at her. "Morning, dear." Mathilde looked at him and smiled. Victor briefly wondered why she looked so out of place, but brushed it off, maybe she's just stressed he reasoned.

After eating breakfast Mathilde walked up to him, and handed him thirty five thousand francs. Victor looked at her in shock and asked where she got the money. Mathilde answered him that she borrowed it from a relative of hers. Victor felt relieved and told her that they would go get the necklace tomorrow.

A day passed and now they were on their way to the jeweler. The jeweler welcomed them and gave the necklace after they had paid. Victor felt happy, they would return the necklace to Jeanne and everything would be back to normal. Or so he thought.

They were walking back home, when someone shouted from behind them "IT'S HER!" Mathilde tried to make to make a run for it, but the police were already too close and managed to grab her. Victor who was confused shouted "What are you doing to my wife?!" The police looked at him and explained how his wife had stolen money from a bank. Victor looked at Mathilde, betrayal written across his face. "Why?" Was all he said, Mathilde felt ashamed, she doesn't answer. The police drags her to their car and leaves Victor upset and hoping things turned out differently.
