Hours later I find myself gazing out the window of the pickup, at the moon. It's beautiful. I glance around it and search for constellations. Lost in thought.
"Almost there." Ethan states. I glance over.
We haven't talked much for most of the ride. Especially once the sun went down. Now, all I can think about is the nightmares and the figure on my balcony. I haven't told anyone yet, I'm scared they will think I'm crazy.
I'm also scared of the feelings I have towards Ethan. It's hard not to like him. He's so charming. He's always really sweet and considerate. That's the problem though. He's too nice sometimes, too agreeable. I like arguing once in a while, but he always agrees about everything, it's frustrating. I want a challenge.
"Are you okay, Melody?"
"huh? Oh, yeah. I'm fine." I say and give him the best smile I can manage, but I know it doesn't reach my eyes. I blush and turn back towards the window as he scans me.
"Tell me the truth. what's bothering you?"
"I'm fine. really." I say, a little to quickly. He glances at me and lifts his eyebrow and I know I'm caught. "Okay, okay. It's just stress. I'm fine. Truly. Don't worry about me."
He gives me another look and I break. I tell him everything that has happened. The whole time he frowns a little deeper. By the time I finish telling him, he seems distressed.
"Someone was spying on you?" he fumes. " I'm going to put up security cameras to monitor your balcony. And add a more specialized locking system on the doors. I will make sure you are safe."
"It's nothing I'm sure. You don't need to do anything. I was probably just imagining it anyways." I reason. " Seriously. It's no bi-..." I'm cut off as multiple things begin to happen. First I am thrown forward in my seat as Ethan slams the brake to avoid the figure that just appeared in front of us. Then I realize the figure is the same one that was on my balcony. But I don't get to look long as Ethan looses control of the vehicle and it spins sideways then flips. I feel myself being tossed around like a ragdoll. Thankfully I'm wearing a seat belt. I can still feel glass and metal hitting my body. Cutting and bruising me. Finally after what feels like forever, we come to a stop, upside down though. Leaving me hanging from my seatbelt in an awkward position. I manage to unhook my seatbelt buckle and land in a heap on the ground, er.. roof. It's then that I realize I haven't heard Ethan move. I glance over to see him hanging, bleeding badly. It appears as though he has broken bones. He is either unconscious or dead and I feel myself begin to panic. I reach over and try to check for a pulse.
Nothing.
I check for breathing.
Nothing.
He's dead. Gone.
Oh God. No. No. No. This can't be happening. No. No. No. No...
