You're rolling around in bed, shifting your pillow for the nth time, unable to find a position that allows you to drift off.
The funny thing is, it's usually Rosie who has trouble falling asleep, but tonight, you have insomnia for two.
There's a big meeting with a client in the morning, and your mind can't stop thinking about all the ways it could go wrong, about all the effort that you and your team have put in so far, and how much of a waste it would be to lose the client under your own watch.
It doesn't help that the time for sleep was running out, either. It's low-key making you panic. It's 2am and you need to be awake by 7:30am. That's 5.5 hours of sleep, assuming you fall asleep right this instant, but you know that won't happen. And if you get 5 or 4.5 hours of sleep- god, then you won't be in the best state to give the presentation.
The cycle of anxious thoughts start again.
You try to think of something else, so of course, your thoughts immediately go to Rosie. Last time you saw her was in New York City a few months back, which was the first time you ever met her, and what a long weekend that was. By the end of it, you two decided to give each other a shot. Since then, she's never been far away from your thoughts.
Of course, long-distance isn't easy, and the relationship has to stay secret. But you're taking it one day at a time, and surprisingly, Rosie has been nothing short of amazing. It doesn't feel like dating an international superstar, aside from the semi-frequent instances where you'd see her blown-up face in a billboard in NYC.
Rosie made time for you, even getting up an hour earlier on most days just to catch you before you went to sleep. You'd chat just as much about her work and your work, about crazy things that happened during the day, and some things worth mentioning from your childhood and family lives.
You do the math - it's 4pm in Korea. She's probably busy, but you decide to send her a text anyway.
I can't sleep 😫
Not even a minute passes and Rosie's calling you.
You answer the voice call, deciding that a video call would only disrupt your sleep more. It's on loudspeaker and you lay your phone on the bed next to your pillow.
"Hii, aren't you working?" you ask.
"Heyy, you... I'm working today, but chilling in the dorm for another hour." Rosie's voice is soft and sleepy despite it being the middle of the day in Seoul. She's so considerate, always putting herself in your shoes, knowing that it would only agitate you more if she spoke with her fully awake voice.
"I feel anxious about work," you start, a groan escaping your mouth.
"There's a really important presentation that I'm giving tomorrow, and a couple of million dollars are on the line. We want the client to renew their contract with us, but the market has been so difficult with Covid and all, and what if they don't want to work with us anymore?"
"Heyy, it's going to be okay," Rosie responds. "Isn't this the client you helped grow from 50,000 users to 500,000, while a bunch of their competitors went bankrupt? That's amazing work... and your team was behind it all."
