"What's going on?" I asked Aiden as I got in his car, hoping he would give me something.
"I don't know, but something feels very wrong."
"I agree. I don't like this at all. What happened to your face?"
"It's a long story. Have you heard from Amaya recently?"
"No, have you?"
"Why would I have heard from her?"
"Why would I have heard from her?"
"She's your ex and you said that you two planned on staying close."
"Yeah, well, things change."
"Avery?"
"Yes?"
"What's that?"
"What's what?"
"On your hand."
"Oh, the ring. Jake proposed to me today."
"Your boyfriend?"
"No, the man on the moon. Yes, my boyfriend... my fiancé." I smiled at the word.
"Why didn't you tell me? Why did I have to find out from the news?"
"I don't know, but it's not like you're telling me everything either."
"What?"
"You know exactly what I mean."
"How did you know about that?" Sweat dripped down his forehead.
"It was everywhere. Why didn't you tell me as soon as it happened? I could've done something." For some strange reason, I couldn't help but feel as if we weren't talking about the same thing.
"Right, yeah: Katie. Sorry."
"What else have you not told me?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I- um," he paused for a moment. "I have a daughter."
"I beg your pardon?"
"Her name's Riley."
"How old is she?"
"Fourteen." his voice was quiet, almost a whisper.
"What?"
"She's fourteen." he said, a little louder this time.
"No, that's not possible. We're only 28."
"Avery, I need to tell you something."
"Yeah, you do."
"When we were fourteen, during the summer, Emily Duncan and I did... stuff."
"No."
"Ave, please. Listen to me."
"How long have you known?"
"I met Riley almost a year ago but she came by my house today after Katie threw a glass at my face. She must've seen it on the news."
"You and Katie broke up today?"
"Yeah, we did." his voice started to break.
"But the news said-"
"I know."
"Pull the car over." I instructed. When he did so, I pulled him into a tight hug. He began to sob on my shoulder, soaking my cardigan. "I love you." I said to him, and I completely meant it.
"Thank you. I love you," he smiled as he pulled away. "Also, you and Jake?"
"Yeah..."
"I'm so happy for you."
"Thanks."
"You'll always be my little sister, though."
"We're twi-"
"Hush, I'm 4 minutes and 27 seconds older than you."
"You're annoying."
"You're younger." We chuckled together as tears fell from both of our eyes.
"Oh, shoot: Axel!" I interrupted.
"Right." With that, he put his foot down on the pedal and we sped down the road.I didn't have a great feeling about what we were about to find.
