I was eight when it happened. Just a little second grader living in a small town called Mill Creek. Through all of these years, I remember everything. Every single one of the details that night. Most people wouldn't, they'd just forget, but not me. It was the last thing I was able to hold onto...
April 17, 2005. A nice, cool, spring Sunday night. My parents and I had gone to the store to pick up some groceries. As soon as we entered the store, I ran to the books and magazines section. There was no need to let my parents know where I was going- they already knew. I loved that place and could stay there all day if only my parents would let me.
On this particular night I had come upon a book about cats. I sat down on a nearby chair and began to read. I didn't even hear him walk up to me until he said, "Good book, huh?"
I jumped and looked up to see a middle-aged man. He had light brown hair that was slicked back and his eyes were dark, and I though I saw a strange glimmer in them, but I ignored it. He wore nice clothing: a button-up shirt, khaki pants, and dress shoes. He looked like a nice man.
I smiled back at him and nodded.
"Are you going to buy it?" He asked curiously.
"No... my parents won't let me," I said as my smile turned into a slight frown.
"Well that's too bad. Hey, you know, I'm checking out right now, would you like me to buy it for you?"
I beamed, obviously happy again. "Yes!" I told him.
He motioned for me to come with him to the check out line and I hopped off of the chair. The workers were unaware the man was not my father and he checked out without a problem.
"Do you think you could help me put my groceries in the car?" He asked hopefully. After seeing the hesitation on my face, he said quickly, "I'm not sure what bag your book is in and there isn't really a place where I can put all of them down and look for it here."
I looked around and saw that he was right. I walked with him to his car, where he opened the trunk and began to load the groceries in. I started to look for the book. When I found it, I turned around and saw the man standing right behind me. "Thanks for the book, mister," I said.
He smiled a different smile then before. "Oh, you're welcome," he said.
I tried to get around him, but before I realized what he was doing, he scooped me up into his arms and shoved me into the trunk, and slammed the door. I didn't understand what was happening. I started screaming and crying for anyone to help me.
Soon I heard the car engine turn on and the car began to move. It had seemed like hours before it stopped, and throughout the car ride, I hadn't stopped screaming either. My voice was hoarse and hurt like hell, but I continued. "Help me-- please someone help!"
Suddenly the trunk of the car opened. The man was looking down at me. "You little bitch." He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down. "Do you ever shut up?"
I sniffled and my eyes darted around, looking to see if there was anywhere I could go if I could somehow escape. Nothing. There were a massive amount of trees around us, so I assumed we were in the woods. I didn't know of any forests that were near Mill Creek.
Suddenly the man grabbed me and hung me over his shoulder, like I was some kind of sack. As much as I tried to hit and kick him to make him put me down, he was too strong. He did not attempt make me quiet as I was screaming.
This worried me. If he didn't care, this meant he wasn't worrying about other people hearing me. We must have been somewhere secluded.
Once I realized this, I stopped struggling and screaming. I lifted my head off of the man's shoulders and looked around. There was not a paved road, only faint lines on the ground where the man's car had weaved around the thick trees to get to this place. No one else had ever been here or known this place.
The man carried me awhile through the dense woods until we reached a huge rock structure. Inside, it was completely dark. The man started to reach out to the wall and started to feel for something. All of the sudden a huge light came on. The man started to walk through one of the cave passages. Once my eyes adjusted, I stiffened at the sight.
All around me, there were what looked like jail cells. They were all empty.
The man stopped at one of these and opened it. He shoved me in and locked the door. I put my hands on the bars and looked at him, confused. I felt like I was in a prison.
Where were we? Why did he take me here? What was he going to do to me?
"Welcome to your new home," the man said with a chuckle.
