Dreams & Nightmares
The dirty blonde haired teen sighed, deep in thought. The book she had been reading sat in her lap, forgotten as her thoughts whirled around in her head. She didn't understand why she always had these dreams, or why they were always about people and creatures that she had never met, or seen, before. Tonight had been especially bad, and she had been tempted to wake her brother up and talk to him, but had decided against it. He had enough on his plate as it was, even if he didn't ever admit it, to her, at least.
Her thoughts turned back to the dream, a shudder racing down her spine as her mind unwittingly flashed to the scream of pain that had come from the young teen as he was attacked by a red eyed beast. Her father had always known how to calm her down, but ever since he had disappeared, the dreams had only gotten worse. Tonight had been more vivid than all the others. She shivered as she remembered the bright red eyes that had dominated the dream. She hoped that, maybe one day, the dreams would go away and she wouldn't wake up in the middle of the night, terrified of what she might see in her dreams.
She sighed again, closing her book and setting it on her nightstand, before getting up and walking to the kitchen that was down the hall from her room. She got a glass of water and was turning to go back to her room when a movement outside the kitchen window caught her eye. She turned the outside lights on and started when she saw two figures run by the very edge of her new backyard. The figures froze as the lights illuminated the yard, allowing for her to see that they were two young men. One was in a dark blue hoodie and had black shaggy hair, while the other was wearing a grey jacket over a white shirt and had short black hair in a buzzcut.
Her crystal blue eyes widened when she recognized the young man in the blue hoodie. He was the same one from her dream! His scream echoed through her head, and she moved to open the sliding back door that led out to the patio in the backyard, but was stopped short by the stair lights turning on.
"Crystal? Is that you?" her mother's voice preceded her as she appeared at the bottom of the stairs, her long black hair slightly frizzy and unkept from sleep. "Is everything alright?"
"Y-yeah, I-I'm fine. I was just getting some water," Crystal responded, turning to face her mother and closing the slightly open back door as she spoke.
"Are you sure you're alright? You didn't have another nightmare, did you?" she asked, briefly glancing at the glass of water that Crystal had left on the counter after spotting the two teens in the backyard.
Crystal quickly shook her head. She didn't want her mother to worry anymore than she already was, after all, she was starting her first day at her new job tomorrow. "I'm fine. Just needed some water. I was just going back to bed when you came down."
Her mother arched an eyebrow in disbelief, but knowing how stubborn her daughter could get when she didn't want to talk about something, decided to let it go. "Alright." Crystal grabbed her glass of water and began to make her way back to her room before her mother's voice stopped her. "Crystal?"
"Yeah?" Crystal turned to face her, her eyes meeting the worried gaze of her mother.
"I know you didn't approve of this move, but we all needed a change. You understand that, right?"
"Yeah," Crystal sighed, looking down as she spoke. "I do. I just wish we didn't have to move so far away."
"I know, but this is a chance for us to start over, to make new friends, new memories. I know this is hard on you and your brother, but it's for the best."
Crystal sighed again, but nodded her head anyway, choosing not to respond. She left her mother standing in the hallway, closing the door behind her. She listened as her mother sighed, turned off the lights and went back upstairs to her own room.
Once Crystal was sure that her mother had gone back upstairs, she opened her bedroom door and hurried back to the back doors, turning the lights on again, trying to see if the two boys were still there, but they were long gone. She was about to turn off the lights and go back to bed when something caught the corner of her eye. Crystal turned back to look out at the backyard. Her eyes widened as she saw the giant shadow that darted across her yard.
What the? Crystal thought to herself, her eyebrows crinkling together as she tried to understand what she had just seen. The dark shape had been running on all fours, and it had looked like a wolf, except much bigger than a normal wolf. It almost looked like the werewolf that Lupin turned into in the Harry Potter movies, but about ten times the size, and nowhere near as skinny.
Crystal shook her head, turning the lights back off and heading back into her room. She settled back into her bed, trying to push all thoughts of the two boys, and the shadow, out of her mind. It didn't help that her dream was flashing through her thoughts as well.
It's not real, Crystal thought, trying to calm her racing heart. You were just seeing things. Overactive imagination, just like Dad always used to say.
No matter how much she tried to convince herself, Crystal couldn't seem to get rid of the feeling that something major was going to happen that night. Something that would not only affect her life, but her family's lives as well.
As she closed her eyes, finally drifting off, the sound of a wolf howling echoed through the silent night. It would be the first of many that Crystal would fall asleep to in Beacon Hills.
