"Tell her, sis."I didn't want to get up. Quite frankly, I didn't want to even walk with the amount of liquor I consumed and the aftermath of it. My head was pounding and felt heavy. Throw up felt as if it was sitting in my throat, waiting to come up. But I pushed all of that to the side after I realized Jade was missing from her drunken spot. Then, I heard a low conversation from the living room and that's what got me up.
If I knew better, I would've stayed sleep or I wouldn't be put in the position I'm in now—Getting caught in a lie I told my best friend.
I could've been honest about what happened to Ekon. But after finding out the truth—my father killing him—how could I out him like that?
I cut my eyes at Cairo, who held that slick ass smirk, and Jade eyed me, curiously. I walked their way, "Jae.. it's not what you think."
"Well, I would hope not." She scoffed, "You failed to mention that your father was there. Why?"
"There's more to the story."
"So tell me," Jade crossed her arms. "I'm all ears."
"Yea' she all ears."
"Shut the hell up, Cairo." I retorted and faced Jade, "I didn't expect my father to be there Jae. I really thought Ekon's sister was going to be there. Till I seen Halle.. and my father. They told me what happened. He really is dead."
"That doesn't explain why you left Deon out of the equation."
I swallowed, glancing over at Cairo before I returned to Jade. "Listen-"
"Deon was there that night." Cairo interjected and Jade set her eyes on him. "He.. My pops was beating on Moms that night and I tried to help. He was fucking me up and Deon came over to help. It all got outta hand. I hit him over the head and I didn't know it would kill him. It just.. happened."
My eyebrows furrowed at the fact Cairo took the blame. What was his angle for that? I watched him move closer to Jade, grabbing her hands gently, as he continued. "I had to protect my mother. Shit, my sister's. You'd do anything to protect Sarai Jo, right?"
Jade sighed softly, falling for it. "Yeah. Of course."
"Then you understand why it had to be done." he spoke softly, "Don't be mad at Caren for not telling you. Deon and Moms just tryna protect me and keep this under wraps. If this get out, innocent lives will be ruined. My pops in Nigeria."
