"Quincy, we need to talk to you about something." my mother said, a stressed and worried look on her face. I switched my eyes to look at my father and saw the same expression. It made my stomach churn at the fact that both of them looked so worried. A million different thoughts flew through my head as I looked at them both in desperation, hoping it wasn't as bad as they were making it out to be. I sat down next to my mother on the couch and she twisted her body to look at me. I could see her tremble with fear, as if what she was about to tell me would change my life forever.
"Mom, what's going on?" I asked, my voice slightly shaky. She sighed and looked down, then slipped her hand underneath mine and held it tightly.
"Honey, we've been waiting to tell you this since... Well since we brought you home." she started, and looked at my father for help. He thought for a moment and then let out a heavy sigh.
"Quincy, you... We adopted you." he said. Those words were like a slap in the face, a punch in the gut, and a bullet going through my heart all at once. All I could do was stare, and the room got uncomfortably silent. How was I supposed to accept that? Out of the blue, for no reason, they told me I was adopted. It was then that I felt like I had no idea who I was anymore. I was no longer Quincy Wright, and I wasn't prepared to feel like I didn't know who I truly was anymore.
I guess they figured I was about to break down and start throwing a tantrum, because they both flinched and held their breath for what I suppose they thought was the inevitable.
"Why... Why didn't you tell me this sooner?" I asked, my voice so quiet even I could hardly hear it. My mother let out a sigh and squeezed my hand.
"We were worried you would be angry with us, and we were waiting for the right moment." she said meekly, looking at me with deep green eyes that could pierce through anyone's soul. I shook my head and looked down at the floor. I was turning 18 in a few days, and they waited until now to tell me that they weren't my real parents.
What could have possibly gone worse? It couldn't get any worse, right? I mean, it's not like its the end of the world, if anything its the beginning of a new chapter for me.
"Who're my birth parents?" I asked without thinking, then looked up at them to find them looking at each other with perplexed faces.
"Honey... We don't know. The adoption agency wouldn't tell us. They apparently didn't want to be found." my mother said. I let out a sigh and then stood. The emotions flooding through my body at that point where too heavy for me to be able to stay in that room.
"I'm going for a run. I need to think for a bit." I said quietly, standing and going to my room to get changed into my running outfit. After lacing up my sneakers, I went downstairs and out the door.
"Be careful, Quincy!" my mother said, I waved and smiled at her reassuringly before I took off in a light jog, music in my ears on full blast, and fresh air to motivate me. I slowly worked my way up into a full run, letting my anger and my frustrations out as I ran. I don't remember how long I ran; I can't even remember where I started not recognizing the area around me.
When I slowed to a stop, I panted and sat down under a large tree. I stared up at the sky through the leaves of the oak, and let out a huge sigh as I let my pulse slow. I could feel the heat on my skin radiating off of me, so when the shocking sting of cold water hit my face, I flinched. It wasn't until I had to open my eyes that I had realized they were closed. The sky was dark and ominous, the large clouds looming over head as if they were angry.
I looked around me and sighed, blinking a few times.
"Wow... I really don't know where I am anymore." I mumbled to myself, reaching down for my phone. I pulled it out and sure enough, I didn't have any service."Great..." I said, leaning my head back against the tree again. I could hardly remember how to get home, so I sat and thought for a few more moments to try to remember where I had come from.
Little did I know that I was being watched. A bit off in the distance, a young male stood clad in what others would think to be elven clothing and armor. His ears we're slightly pointed and his cheekbones were sharp and defined. He had long blonde hair that almost made it to the middle of his back, and a crown-like band around his head. It peaked down, almost like a widows peak with a single emerald jewel that hung from the tip of the peak.
As he watched, he grew more and more curious as to who I was. He circled around and looked towards me, widening my eyes as he got a closer look.
"...Its her. I must alert the others." he said to himself before disappearing into the forest.
