PROLOGUE

It was dark, and I was cold. In the distance the one light that had been on in the small cottage extinguished. I was alone and there was no one there to comfort me. I looked up at the starry sky, all of them twinkled like little diamonds, the wisps of pink and yellow-y orange were streaked in-between. Quietly I sobbed to my self, tear tracks mixed with the black mascara, like paint flowing down my cheeks. How did i even end up here? What did I do that was so wrong? Falling in love, was that it?

I took my hands off my bleeding neck, there was no point in even trying to stop the blood, i was too far gone. I ran my fingers through the strands of long prairie grass, the cool leaves wiping away the blood. I suppose it was a nice way to die, under a starry sky, in a beautiful field, where there was no wet mud or grass snakes. Well, as far as i had seen. I sighed and lay down, smiling up at the sky. Giggling as a shower of shooting stars flew by, dancing between the black sky, playing with one another. As quick as they came, they vanished. I closed my eyes and made a wish, feeling like i was six years old again when my dad had taken me camping and i had seen my first shooting star. I always remembered him saying, "You see that Cassie?" And i nodded, our faces illuminated by the moonlight, "That's a shooting star, and every time you see one you make a wish, okay?" I nodded and squeezed my eyes shut tight and chanted over and over again in my head what i wished for.

The world turned dimmer in a way, as i was dreaming about my daddy. At least now i'd be with him and my mom, and i would be at peace. Before the world turned black, i heard someone whisper my name through the wind. "Cassie,"  it was whispering, "Come home with me." Home. That was a place i hadn't thought of for a long time. It was the perfect lil' place, white, two floors high, and a porch that went all round right to the back of the house where there was the perfect little garden. Flower beds, tire swing hanging from this big oak tree, a fairly big pool and apple green grass that had the nicest smell right after it was cut. Hell we had the whole she-bang. The white picket fence, the 2.4 kids and a nice neighbour hood where every fourth of July there would be a big street barbecue where all the kids would play in the pool, and eat ice creams. The parents relaxing, laughing, beers all round. Too perfect...

It was funny what you thought of when you were dying, 'suppose it's the shock, or the fear and panic of dying that us humans just can't shake. I missed home, and being young and care free. I missed the perfect life. I missed it all. But even if it was just for a few seconds, i could die happy knowing that i had been there again. So that is what i wished for. And as i slipped away from this world to the next i could hear the distance giggling of young children, the heat of the early afternoon sun beating down upon me. The smell of that apple green grass, and then there was nothing.....

I awoke with a start, i frantically felt my body to see if i was all intact. I looked down, i was wearing a pair of denim shorts with a plain red tee, sunglasses on my head and a book propped up by a pair of Birkenstock's. I tilted my head and narrowed my eyes as i caught sight of the tire swing hanging from an oak tree, exactly like my old home. I ran my fingers through the grass and smiled as the crisp smell of newly mown lawn carried on the breeze. I jumped to my feet and ran right over to the Crystal blue pool and jumped in, fully clothed. I laughed and lay on my back, gently floating along. Was this heaven? Home?
