Amber's POV:
Birds chirped as the afternoon light filtered through the trees, a light breeze rustling the crisp autumn leaves. I swung slightly in my cream, knotted hammock, enjoying nature while reading one of my favorite novels. A squirrel chattered busily nearby, probably storing nuts for winter. I sighed, marking my page, then plopped my head in my hands. Everyone seems to have their own little niche. I muttered darkly in my head. Their own roll in life. Meanwhile I can barely survive being a teenage girl with mild acne problems and a cruddy after-school job. I made a disgusted sound and stood up from my lounging position on the hammock.
More of these insecure thoughts tumbled through my consciousness as I paced around the garden, near tears. I couldn't stand it, couldn't stand being the "geek", the "weirdo", the outcast. My friends were either a couple random weirdos that decided that I wasn't actually a screw-up, or the fictional characters that I read about every day.
I shuffled over to my oak tree, the one under which I buried my black poodle, Percy, when he died a couple months ago. After my dad had left my mother and I, our family became unstable. Ma looked tired and sad all the time, and Percy and I were the only comfort she had nowadays. So, initially, when I left for school, Ma was alone all day because Percy had died. Sometimes she would be draped across the couch, crying her heart out and mumbling to herself. I would have to comfort her until she had composed herself enough to eat, and the next day it was as if nothing had happened.
